Here in Hong Kong they no longer give out plastic bags at stores. You can pay a small fee and get one, but for the most part everyone has gotten on board with using re-usable bags. So today I made my own fabric shopping bag. This weekend I made a birthday gift for a friend. Its really nice to not see the plastic everywhere! I made a bad that folds up and can be put in your purse. Here’s the finished product:
Here are the pieces you will need to make this bag. The large piece is a rectangle folded in half (can be as large or small as you want) this is the body of the bag. Two straps, sewed right sides together, and a pocket with finished edges.
I use a pen or chopstick to turn small pieces of fabric…turn the straps right side out..
I sewed a verse on the pocket, you also need to put the closures on before you put in on the bag. I used a big button, but a snap will work too.
Pin and sew the pocket to one side of the bag. It should be a couple of inches from both the top and bottom. Sew around three side of the pocket, leaving a flap loose where the button is. You can see my yellow pin marking where I want to sew this.
After the pocket is attached, turn the large piece right sides together and sew the side seams.
Now comes the tricky part to explain… You want to fold in the corners to give the bag a bottom. Fold up my the side seams and sew straight across. I reinforced this seam a few times.
It should now look like the right side.
Here’s another view of the folded corner.
For the top hem I folded a small lip and zig-zagged, then ironed a bigger hem and sewed around.
Pin and sew the straps to the bag, making sure not to twist them.
here’s how to fold it up: Place the pocket side down and fold the sides in to the width of the pocket on the back. Fold in the top and bottom as well and use the closure to latch.
Here’s the side view of the neat folded fabric shopping bag! ENJOY!
