Inside: find lots of ideas for the best pie iron recipes. Make meals for all times of the day with these great ideas.
We love camping as a family, and especially when we eat pie iron recipes while out. You can also make these over your backyard fire if you aren’t a camper. This post is full of ideas for meals to make in a pie iron, but I would bet that after reading this you will also be inspired to create your own tasty pie cooker meals.
One weekend while camping I made the best pie iron recipes for our family. You can also make these recipes with a pie maker in your backyard.
We were fortunate to go camping over Easter weekend. I decided that we would only eat pie iron recipes for the whole weekend. So I planned out the meals and we ate some yummy camp food that weekend. We camp backpacking style…. so we have minimal gear.
We cook over an open fire and the pie iron is great for this style of cooking. {it also is super fun for a backyard campfire if you aren’t a camper!} Here are a few photos from our camping on the beach over the years… every one carries their own weight… even the little ones carry something {even if its just the sand toys! } These pictures are all older…
How to use a Pie Iron / Pie Cooker
Ok, let’s get to the food! I loved that I was able to prep SO much at home for these meals! First, lets talk pie iron basics.. you need two slices of bread for each pie and the bread should be larger than the iron. Butter one side of each slice of bread {that side will go against the iron.}
Put your toppings on that slice of bread and then top with the other slice, butter side up {again towards the iron} Make your sandwich as desired {lots of ideas below!} and place in pie iron. Trim excess bread from edges.
Place in fire over coals, cook on one side, then turn and cook on the other. You can buy pie irons online at Amazon or in stores in the camping section. Some are too thin and the pies burn easily, so get a decent one. You will want to check your bread frequently to prevent burning while you get the hang of cooking with a pie cooker.
Pie Iron Recipe Ideas
1. Campfire Cheeseburger Pies
Cheeseburger pies
Cheeseburger pies are a huge hit with everyone. Make on your next camping trip or backyard fire night.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- cheese slices
- 8 slices bread
- butter
- toppings of your choice.. ketchup, mustard, veggies etc...
Instructions
- Prep meat at home. Pre cook in a pan and season to liking. Place in a container.
- Slice cheese and place in bag.
2. Breakfast Egg Pie
Ingredients-
- Eggs {1 per sandwich}
- Slices of cheese
- Bread {2 per sandwich}
- Bacon
- Pre-cooked veggies {optional}
So for this recipe I usually pre-cook the bacon at home or cook it in a pan on the fire. This just makes the whole breakfast cooking go faster. However, if you really want to only use pie cookers, you could cook the bacon in one half just like I do the eggs.
To prep the ingredients cook the bacon {at home or over the fire} and cook one egg in each side of your pie iron. Make sure to put lots of butter in the iron first, add the egg, give a little mix, then cook over the fire until firm.
Now, place this egg square and some bacon on a piece of bread to create your pie. You can add veggies and cheese as well for an omelette pie.
3. Pizza Pie Recipe
Ingredients –
- Bread {2 slices per pie}
- Tomato Pizza Sauce
- Pepperoni
- Mozzarella cheese
- Any other pizza toppings you want
Place tomato sauce and toppings between two slices of buttered bread and cook over the fire.
and there you go! You too can eat camping pies for a whole weekend! Some other Campfire Pie Ideas:
- Fruit Pies {jam/pie filling and bread}
- cinnamon rolls {open a tube of rolls and place on on a well greased pie cooker to bake in the fire}
- Grilled Cheese {add onions, tomato avocado for a deluxe version}
- Chicken cheese pockets {Pre-cooked chicken, cheese and spinach}
- What else can you create??
