I love monkey bread. What’s not to love?! It’s a dessert you eat for breakfast. My whole family loves it, but honestly I really prefer healthy breakfast food. {it’s the most important meal of the day, right?!} I would love to have a monkey bread recipe that was tasty and yet a more healthy breakfast option for my family. With that in mind I’ve created an Orange Monkey Bread recipe that is flavorful and I can feel better about feeding my family for breakfast.
Okay, now I will tell you upfront… if you are wanting monkey bread that is a gooey, sugar-covered dessert, this is not it. This is a orange flavored bread, that is in fun lumps you can pull apart and eat with your fingers. It’s flavorful, not too sweet, and the bread is perfectly chewy and soft. What makes this bread so good and low in sugar? It’s flavored and sweetened with Sunkist TEN! That’s right, the soda contains only TEN calories per serving and this whole recipe uses only about two servings… leaving plenty of Sunkist TEN for enjoying straight out of the bottle!
Sunkist TEN and other TEN calorie sodas are available at Safeway Brand Stores. Visit the Just For U website for a coupon for a free 2L of any flavor of the TEN calorie products (7-UP Ten, Sunkist Ten, A&W Ten, Canada Dry Ten). The offer is available from 5/12 – 5/19, while supplies last.
Have you every baked a box cake with soda? It was a trick I learned in college. 1 box of cake mix and 1 can of sprite equaled a yummy and light cake… no egg or oil needed, perfect for college students. I didn’t cut out all the other ingredients to make this, but I this have this trick in mind when I was making this bread. The soda replaces the water and sugar in the bread and the sugar in the topping. The boys gave this orange monkey bread recipe a big two thumbs up!

This sounds really great and healthier too. I am always looking for ways to decrease sugar and calories. I have never made a box cake with soda, I need to try that. Can you use sugar free sodas?

Emily says
yes, you can use sugar free sodas! last summer I used diet sprite to make a box of chocolate cake.. its super easy!! Don’t use the whole can… go by consistency when adding the liquid!
Nicole says
That’s definitely one of the most creative uses I’ve seen for the 10 sodas! I love it! Sweet, but not “diabetic coma” sweet. 🙂 The orange zest is a nice touch!
Emily says
yep, it was the perfect mix of flavor and not too sweet!!!

I would have never thought of using a diet soda in bread, but it looks really good. Orange rolls are some of my favorite, so I must admit that these look great and such a unique idea! Thanks and have a great weekend!
