Flutter Sleeves Tutorial and Pattern Hack

I love this new t-shirt dress with flutter sleeves. I used an easy flutter sleeves tutorial and pattern hack to change up the sleeves on my t-shirt dress free pattern and create a cute new look for Rose. The video above gave the quick version of the flutter sleeve tutorial and if you scroll to the bottom of the post you can find a full length tutorial version with a few more photos in between.

Flutter Sleeves Tutorial –

So I used my free shirt dress pattern to make this flutter sleeve dress. I edited the sleeves as shown in the videos and also make the shoulders just a bit more narrow than the original pattern. I’ve made it many times and have learned that Rose has pretty narrow shoulders.

Here is a screen shot from the video where I talk about making the shoulders more narrow. I took off 1/2″ from the outside shoulder edge. Adjust yours as needed.

Rose has already worn this dress a few times, I can tell it’s going to be a summer staple.

How to make flutter style sleeves

• I cut the sleeve very short, only 1/2″ on the underside.
• I also added a bit of width to the top curve so I had some fabric to gather
• The flutter edge can be done on a serger or regular sewing machine – just stretch as you sew
• I used a normal machine.. Make sure to do the zig zag stitch on the very edge of the fabric. Check out either video for more details.

How to hack a sleeve pattern – 

Here’s a full shot of the front and back of the dress. Yes, those are temporary tattoos on my daughter… if you’ve seen her on my FB live you know she’s a bit of a crazy one.. my mom calls her the Chinese Ramona {haha!}
