Felt Football Pattern –
It’s football season! It’s a fun time for families to come together and enjoy some time together with great snacks and games. We get the kids involved with a fun mini football game while we are watching the “real” game on tv. I’ve got a free felt football pattern for you today so you can also play our fun mini game. It gives my kids something to focus on while the adults are watching and you can make it even more fun with prizes for the winners… I’ll explain a bit more so keep reading!
I really love working with felt, and making up games for my kids, so projects like this always make me so happy{ha!} OK… so the game we play goes like this… we have a list of words… {you can use ours by downloading HERE} each person gets a list {simplify for younger kids}, the ball starts with one person and when you hear one of the words, you pass the ball to the next person. When either team scores {either through touchdown or field goal} the person holding the ball gets a small prize {my kids love quarters!}
Then keep passing and playing as the game is played. Keep the prizes small as you may have to give out quite a few. The kids actually pay attention because they are listening for the passing words. My mini felt football is easy to make and I used a sewing machine to make it, but you could make easily with just needle and thread too.
Want to make your own felt football? Download my felt football pattern HERE– its a simple template. You will also need brown felt, some stuffing and either a white shoelace {that’s what I used} or some thin white ribbon.
Using the template, cut 4 pieces from felt.
Place two pieces together and sew along one curved edge. You can do this easily by hand if you don’t have a sewing machine.
After you have the two together, open up and with the right side facing you – sew a long piece of white lacing down the seam and three short pieces crossing the long piece to add the football detailing.
Add the other two sides to the football, continuing to sew the curved edges together.
Leave the last side open. Sew it 3/4 closed.
Stuff the football. I used stuffing, but you could also use tissue or newspaper if that’s what you have on hand.
Hand stitch up the opening.
Now you are ready to have a fun family football game night. Print the word list, grab your mini felt football and your favorite snacks and get ready for game time!
Here’s a fun little video of how it the football goes together
