SO cute and festive, right? This is actually a really easy sewing tutorial and I’m going to give you all the tips and tricks you need to create your own runner here in this tutorial.
Would this tree runner complete your holiday table? Here are a few other runner pattern/tutorials I’ve sewn in the past.
How to sew a Christmas Table Runner
ok…First up… I’ll admit I didn’t really sew the runner. I started with an inexpensive IKEA runner and I added the applique on top. This is what I’m going to show you how to do today. You could also sew the runner base if you want as well.
Christmas Runner Supply List
- Download the FREE Template for the tree/star from my shop here
- Use the SVG file if cutting with a machine {as I will show below} or the PDF version if hand cutting the applique.
- The Blue IKEA runner I used can be found here
- A similar runner on Amazon here or here.
- Fabric Fuse or similar
- Decorative thread
- Fabric scraps. For the trunk squares you need a small scrap, the same for the star. For the tree you need two 12″ x12″ squares.
This is a simple sewing tutorial that I spiced up by adding some decorative stitching to my applique. You can do this or keep your stitches very basic.
Fuse the applique fuse to the back side of the fabric.
If your cutting machine has a special fabric blade, install it now. This is the thin fabric blade for the Scan N Cut.
Open the SVG in your cutting machine software or print the PDF version. Cut TWO tree shapes and TWO trunks, also cut ONE star. The fabrics you choose will determine the look of your Christmas Table runner.
Find the center of the runner and place the star there. The pin on the left photo is the center and you can see my star placement. On either side of the star you will arrange the tree pieces. They extend outward from the center star.
Iron the pieces in place to secure them. The fabric fuse will hold it all in place while you sew.
I chose a different fun stitch for each part of the tree. I thought this would add a nice touch to my runner. You could also hand stitch each piece in place.
Here are all three stitches I used for my sewing. What fun stitches will you use for your Christmas Table Runner?
SO cute right!! I love this festive table…

Cute! I like that the applique looks good from either side, which doesn’t always happen with table runners.
