inside: Learn how to make a DIY fabric phone case with this tutorial. Create a custom phone case with a clear phone case and some fabric. Fun and easy DIY.
I’m always on the lookout for new, fun phone cases. I like to change often to switch things up. My new DIY fabric phone cases are so fun and easy to make and there are so many options with this tutorial. Today I’ll give you ideas for embroidery, quilting and sublimation to create a custom phone case with fabric that you will love!
DIY fabric phone case
I’m so excited about these new fabric phone cases. I’ve also tried three different clear cases to see which one works best with the fabric layer inside. All the details and supplies will be below! One phone case was made with embroidery, one by quilting some fabric and the final with sublimation.
I created all three with fabric and another fun element as well. I’m really loving the embroidered one, and am excited to try a bunch of different designs. Once you have the clear phone case you can make a new embroidered insert whenever you want.
I also created a little scrappy quilt insert and the final case is made with a sublimation print. Again, with the sublimation the possibilities are endless and you can switch out the insert often…
The fabric is backed with a stabilizer and not glued in, making it super easy to switch out the inserts whenever you want. You can glue the fabric into the case if you want, but this was not what I was going for.
Supplies for creating custom fabric phone cases
- Clear phone case. I ordered three different ones from Amazon. THIS ONE was the best! {even though I don’t love the white circle on it, the fabric fit the best inside and the phone still had room. You can buy for lots of phone models.
- Fabric Scraps
- Embroidery machine
- sublimation printer
- Sticky stabilizer
How to make an embroidered phone case
I’m going to start with the embroidered option, since I think it’s my favorite! I have a clear phone case, my stabilizer and some fabric. I used a free embroidery design from Artspira for this project.
In the App, I chose a 5 x 7″ hoop {my hoop size}, moved the design to the center {so I had room for my phone case} and then wirelessly transferred the design to my machine.
It’s to easy to start embroidering when I can just transfer the design with the push of a button. It stitched out beautifully! Make sure to put the stabilizer on the back of the fabric before you start stitching.
Take the fabric and stabilizer out of the hoop and then use a fabric pen to trace the phone case.
Cut INSIDE the marking line to create the fabric insert. You may need to trim more of the fabric to get it to fit. Trace and cut open the camera opening as well.
The stabilizer will stay on the back of the fabric to help it lay flat and stiff. I love the look of this embroidered case and now I want to make 10 more!
How to create a quilted phone case
For the quilted fabric case you can create ANY design you like! I made a little scrappy version and I love it. In my bin I had scraps of this sewing fabric that I used. I cut strips of fabric in different widths.
Sew all the strips together, then pressed them flat.
From there I cut the new piece into strips again and re-sewed them back together. Make sure this piece is at least as big as your phone case.
Stick a piece of stabilizer to the back of this fabric. Sew lines or any design to “quilt” the fabric and stabilizer.
Here’s mine {haha}
Follow the same directions as above to trace and cut the fabric to fit in the phone case. enjoy!!
DIY sublimation phone case
My final phone craft of the week was to make a simple sublimation phone case. Transfer a sublimation print/design to the machine using Artspira.
I took this floral design and made a custom size 4 x 7″ before printing to save ink.
It printed perfectly. Flip over and place on the fabric.
Press to transfer the design to the fabric. Of course it is most vibrant on white fabric, but I love it on the blue. I need to buy some white muslin to make more.
Stick stabilizer to the back before tracing.
Trace and cut the fabric to place inside the clear case.
What other kinds of custom phone cases can you think to make?
