My husbands favorite pie is banana cream… usually I make it with a box of pudding mix and a graham cracker crust and call it a day… Every once in awhile I make it from scratch.. and it’s SO GOOD. The box pudding cannot compare to the real thing. So I’m sharing my best banana cream pie recipe… and I even made it green for St. Patrick’s day… So yummy and festive!
ok, so I’ll admit, maybe a green banana cream pie wasn’t the best idea… this looks a little too much like slime or gak for my liking, but it was still SO good. We had no problem polishing off this pie.
I put the bananas on the bottom and the cream on top so it comes out layered when sliced.. add some whip cream and you’ve got yourself and incredible dessert. I’m not a huge fan of recipes where you have to stand over the pan stirring the whole time. The is a recipe that I will make an exception for… plus I have a kindle, so now I just read while stirring {ha!}
Best Banana Cream Pie Recipe
Ingredients
- 3/4 c. white sugar
- 1/3 c. flour or 3 TBS cornstarch
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 cups whole milk
- 3 egg yolk - beat
- 2 tsp vanilla
- 1 pre-baked pie crust or graham cracker crust
- 4 sliced bananas
- 2 TBS butter
Instructions
- In a saucepan combine flour, sugar and salt. Add milk and cook over med. heat, stirring constantly until bubbly. Cook 2 more min, then remove from the heat. In another bowl, beat the 3 egg yolks, then stir a bit of the hot milk mix into the egg, stir well. Pour the eggs into the saucepan and mix in. Cook 2 more min, stirring! Remove from the heat, add butter and vanilla. Slice the bananas and put them into the cooked crust. Bake at 350F or 175C for 12 min. Remove and chill for 1 hr. Serve with whip cream and enjoy!
I added a bit of green food coloring while I was stirring the cream. You could also use other colors for different holidays, or it’s a lovely cream color if left natural.
If you need a good pastry crust recipe here is mine.
What’s your favorite pie recipe? Are you a from scratch baker, or do you keep it simple {like me most of the time!}?

It took me awhile to figure out why it was green when the title said Banana Cream Pie… lol I’m such a “blonde” that it isn’t even funny. If I would have stopped staring at the picture and would have started reading I would have figured it out a lot quicker! Hahaha! After getting over it being green it does actually sound DELISH as I love a good Banana Cream Pie and haven’t had one in forever! I’ll have to give this recipe a try for sure!

I love this recipe–simple, natural ingredients. Love the idea of dying it green for St. Patrick’s Day! Finally a green St. Patrick’s Day food that isn’t mint flavored! Thanks for linking up your recipe at This Is How We Roll Thursday.
