Inside: Make a seasonal decorative candle cozy to keep your candles burning no matter what the holiday or what the candle was originally. Easy sewing tutorial for fun holiday home decor.
I love candles!! Also, I {may} have a problem where I buy LOTS of candles when I see them on sale. Buying 10 Christmas candles may seem like a great idea in Nov, but when it’s Jan and all I have are Christmas candles I’m not too pleased with myself. A few years ago I made some a fall decorative candle cozy to cover a summer candle for fall and today I’ve got some Christmas candles covered with cut cozies for Valentines Day.
Decorative Candle Cozy
This is such a fun sewing project and today I’m going to show you two simple ways to make cute candle cozies for any holiday as well as a fun round up of other gorgeous valentines crafts from some of my friends.
Several years ago I made a fun little cover for a Halloween candle I was trying to make last all fall. It worked so well I decided to make a Valentines cozy for a Christmas candle I picked up on sale. I know I can just use the candle and not worry about what holiday the sticker says, but I also wanted this to add to my home decor not be a sore spot for me.
Another cute option is to make a little quilted mat for your candle to sit on. This adds a fun holiday item to your home and gives my candles a home to sit on. I made this candle mat like these scrappy potholders, just without the padding.
Cozy Sewing Tutorial –
Let’s sew!! Here are the supplies you need.
- A candle {buy on sale!!}
- Holiday fabric for you chosen holiday scraps, jelly rolls and fat quarters work great.
- Fusible foam or other interfacing
I cut 1″ strips of fabric for very thin quilted look. You can make any design or even just cut a solid piece of fabric the size of your candle {measuring directions below}
Let’s start by determining the size our cozy will be. Measure your candle’s side to determine the height and all the way around to determine the length. Add ½” to the height and 1-2” to the length. If using snaps add 2”, if using a button closure add 1”. I
For example – these were my measurements and I was using a button, so my final dimensions were 3.5” x 13”
Then cut a back piece the full dimension of your measurements. Mine is 3.5” x 13”. Also cut your interfacing at this time. You should have seam allowance on both long sides and more on the ends. My interfacing is 3” x 12”.
If you are keeping the cozy very simple cut the front and back the same size.
If you are making a quilted design sew together as desired. Here are all my 1″ strips sewn together. I sewed all together then pressed.
I decided to cut this big piece into smaller ones and sew the sides together until the rectangle was the correct size as my back piece.
Fuse your interfacing or foam to your backing with a seam allowance on all sides and a wider allowance on one short end. {this is where the closure will go}
Place the quilted top right sides together. Sew around on all side with a 1/4″ seam allowance leaving the short side with less interfacing/foam open for turning.
You can also add some fun top stitching if you want.
After you turn right sides out poke out the corners. Need some tips for turning fabric? Check out my turning fabric tips post.
You can choose a button or snaps or even velcro for the candle closure.
I added an elastic piece for the button when I closed the opening on the short end. Fold the seam allowance in and press before sewing the short end closed. If doing snaps just close the hole.
Add a button and then put on your candle. Or add snaps… any way you want it to be attached your candle cozy will look adorable and be a fun holiday piece in your home.
