It’s Free Pattern Friday!! Today’s freebie is a mommy and me version for these cute color blocked tunics free pattern. A picture was posted in my pattern group {join here!} asking me to make mommy and me tunics… they were color blocked like these {actually I liked the red and grey of that photo better than our pink ones, but this was fabric I had in my stash… Anyway.. check out all our fun photos, then grab the link to download and the full photo tutorial at the bottom!! Mommy and Me Tunic Free Sewing Pattern –
I used three fabrics for our tunics – Dk grey, grey stripe and the pink. Red would look so cute with the grey for the holidays, but we can wear the pink all spring. The girls pattern goes from size 12M – 12Y and the womans from xs-xxl… this range should pretty much cover all sizes between 12m – xxl, as the womens xs in not that much bigger than the 12.. you should be able to adapt to fill any gap.
Rose was really into the camera remote… The sides of the hem have an optional curve,
I can’t believe we got us both looking this nice with the timer… This tunic is designed to fit slightly on the loose side and the color blocking lines are on the pattern. You can also just make a solid color if you would like.
Okay! Let’s get to the pattern!

The fabric needed will depend on the sizing for both patterns… Since this is a freebie, I’m not going to do all that math for you… BUT… with the ones I made the main fabric {pink} was 1 yard of 60″ wide, and about a 1/2 yard of the striped and just scraps for the grey.. that should get you started! Both patterns have 3/8 {1cm} seam allowance added.
You do need to add a seam allowance to each color blocked piece though. Here are the pieces of the Color Blocked Tunic Free Pattern cut apart and each line shows where I added an additional 3/8″. You only need to add the seam allowance where the pieces will be joined, not on the bottom or top edges.
Sew the three pieces of the sleeve together with right sides together as shown. Do with both sleeves.
Hem the ends of the sleeve by folding back the edge 1/2″ and sewing with a double needle. See this post for double needle tips.
Sew the tunic top and bottom together with right sides touching.
Sew front and back tunic together at ONE shoulder seam. Then measure the open neckline. Multiply the measurement by .8 to get the neck band length. I made mine 1.25″ wide… so 1.25″ wide x 12.8″. Use this formula for all bands. You can cut the womens 1.5″ if you want just slightly wider.
Top-stitch around the neckline with a narrow zig-zag or double needle.
Math the center of the sleeve with the shoulder seam. Pin the two ends as well, then ease together the two sides. Sew the sleeve on both sides of the shirt.
Before you sew the side seams you will create the curved hem. {if you want a straight hem, skip this and sew the sides seams first} Start 3″ from bottom of shirt for the womens {2″ for the girls} and turn under 1/2″, ease around the corner, then turn up 3/4″ and finish the hem.
Start at the sleeve and sew down the sleeve, then side. Finish the side when you get curved hem. Keep the right side together and leave the curve open.
Finish the side seam by going straight across the bottom of the side seam. Keep the seam allowance open on the inside of tunic. See the circled part? the curve can be tricky… using an iron can help and even when I was finished I pressed the seam and it really improved the curve. If you did a straight hem, just hem the bottom of the shirt at this point… AND you are finished!! Now make another one for matching outfits!! Or just one works too, if thats more your style…

I downloaded the women’s pattern and printed it. I got 15 sheets, and arranged them 4 across, like in the diagram above. I have the front and sleeve, but only part of the back. Do I use the color blocking parts for the rest of the back, or did I miss something. I have checked the download, and on craftsy, but can’t find the missing pieces. Thanks for the great pattern…it looks so cute I can’t wait to try it!
