inside: Sew a cozy Christmas fabric blanket from flannel and this easy tutorial. Simple quilting technique and fun frayed edges give this quilt a cozy and unique look.
I’m preparing once again to film for It’s Sew Easy. I’ll be heading to Clevland in early Dec to film several segments and one of the projects that I will be sharing is a frayed flannel blanket. I’ve sewn MANY of these over the years. but realized that we didn’t actually have one around for me to use as an example… well, I made this cozy Christmas fabric blanket AND created an example for me to use for the show as well.
Sew a Cozy Christmas Blanket
SO cute right!? I found this amazing cozy Christmas fabric at Joann Fabric and was so inspired to sew with it.
I purchased 1 yard of each fabric {five total} and made a cute lap size quilt. I had a bit of leftover fabric so I could have made it a bit larger. My quilt is 5 x 6 squares. Each square is 8″ so the quilt is 40″ x 48″ and I made 30 squares.
I love how cozy and fluffy the edges get you wash and dry your quilt. The best part is the blanket will only get softer as you use and wash it.
This is not only a great baby blanket as I’ve made in the past, but also a great cozy blanket for snowy days.

Cozy Christmas Fabric quilt tutorial
Want to make a cozy Christmas blanket with flannel? Head over to my post from a few years ago to check out my full video and photo tutorial for creating your very own frayed flannel Christmas blanket. Scroll all the way to the end of the tutorial post for the video.
Here are some additional tips to add to the original tutorial.
While I sewed a 1″ border to cut and fray on this quilt I was thinking that a satin quilt binding would also be a great finish for this type of quilt.
When I sew the blocks together I split the squares and open the seam allowances. I used to just sew the seams together any which way.
Spring loaded short scissors are hugely helpful in the making of this quilt.
After sewing all the 1″ seam allowances, use the scissors to carefully cut up all the fabric. IF you happed to cut a seam, you must sew it back up.
Wash and dry your quilt a couple of times before using. This is what it looks like after a wash and dry and wash and dry. SO cute right???

Hello Emily,
What size did you actually cut your squares for the Christmas flannel quilt? You say you used 5 X 6 8″ squares, measuring 40″ X 48″ total. I assume that you cut 9″ squares to allow for 1/2″ seams? Since you stated that you had fabric left over, do you think the 5 yards would allow for a 6 X 7 quilt?
Thank you,
Wendy Craig

The seams are a full 1′ so cut 1″ larger than you want your squares.
