inside: sew a DIY mesh soap bag for easy soap use in the shower. This simple sewing tutorial makes a great gift or stocking stuffer with fun soap. Scrubby mesh soap bags are the perfect shower tool.
My husband drops his soap in the shower every morning. I’m not kidding! If I’m still in bed I hear the loud “thump!”, in looking for something to hold soap I found mesh soap bags. I decided to make my own DIY version and I’m hoping this will make the soap easier to hold and it’s great for the lather too. You can buy mesh scrubby soap bags, but this version was pretty easy to sew myself.
DIY Mesh Soap Bag
I sewed these up for stocking stuffers for my boys, but I think they are going to be super useful in the shower too. I bought some fun soap to add to the bag and in about 20 min I was able to sew up to soap bags.
The mesh makes a great scrubby and works up a great lather too. You can buy this kind of mesh by the yard, and with a few layers, it makes a super fun shower bag.
I’m pretty sad I didn’t have enough mesh to make one of these for myself, but I will have to get some more and sew more bags soon. Here are a couple of other fun things I’ve sewn for the bath:
How to make a mesh soap bag
ok! Let’s make a mesh soap bag! Here are the supplies you will need:
The size you cut the mesh will depend on the size of your bar of soap. Although slightly larger is always good. You always want the bag to be at least two layers of mesh {mine is actually four}.
Open up the top edge of the mesh bag and sew a casing for the cord. I used a zig-zag stitch to sew along the top edge and then again 3/4″ down from the top. Because you have multiple layers mesh you can thread the cord through this casing.
Uses a bodkin to pull the cord through the casing. Make sure to have around 6″ extra inches on each side of the mesh.
Fold over to form a circle at the top where the cord is, then sew from UNDER the cord down the side and across the bottom to create the bag. I also used a zig-zag to sew the edge through all the layers of the mesh.
Add a toggle to the cord. Make sure both ends of the cord come through. You may need to melt the ends to get it through the toggle hole. Knot the ends of the cord so it won’t come out through the toggle. Melt ends of the cord {if you used a nylon cord}
Now you can add your soap and cinch closed the top.
Add water and scrub-a-dub-dub… watch the bubbles flow. Hang in your shower to dry between uses and enjoy your scrubbing mesh soap bag.

Hi, Emily, You have great ideas! I have made these kinds of bags (similar) before, but found the cotton mesh fabric I could buy stayed wet and the soap just melted away faster! So, I purchased the nylon shower “puffs” and took them apart using 2 layers of mesh for each bag. They don’t last forever, but they’re really cheap to make! Thanks for reminding me it’s time to make more. – Kathy in W TN, USA
