We don’t live in a place with snow… actually we live in the sub-tropics… BUT, this Christmas we spent time with family in WI and IA and I knew the boys would need some cold weather wear. I made them these fleece jackets… and then decided to whip up some DIY snow pants. I used the fantastic new kids pants pattern… The Bottoms Up Pants by In Only Designs… I tested these pants back in Nov and knew that they were the perfect pants pattern to use for my snow pants.
These pants are full in the bottom area which makes them perfect for wearing over cloth diapers {the intended use} OR it also makes them perfect for wearing OVER pants… I used a water proof fabric I found at a market, so it wasn’t super warm, but over a pair of fleece pants, they were a perfect DIY snow pants.
I added super large pockets to these pants, so I will show you quickly how I made them. These pockets are larger than the ones included in the pattern because I wanted hats and mittens to be able to fit for safe keeping. What makes these pockets larger is that they actually cross the side seam. This photo shows how large they are compared to the front pants pattern piece.
I cut two pieces from flannel and two from the water proof fabric. Sew them together right sides together, making sure there is a right side and a left side. {yes, I do not like to iron… in fact I never do if I can help it!} Turn right side out…
Then top-stitch the curved side that you won’t be sewing to the pants. Sew the pants side seams first then lay the pocket 1 1/2 inch from the top of the pants and the side crossing the seam. Sew on all sides and then continue with your pants assembly…. This kind of large pocket is great for boys pants of all kinds because you can put all kinds of “treasures” in them.
I love the way the pants and my jacket go together… The boys had a blast in the snow and we enjoyed our cold weather Christmas! I also knit the hat several years ago, but I have no idea what pattern I used… Max has been wearing it all winter and it fits him perfect, I’m just glad it’s getting used.
The bottom of the pants were finished with elastic to fit tightly over boots and keep out the cold and snow.

I was wondering if you could help me……..I have a pair of snowmobile pants that the stitching has come out in the crotch area and half way down the leg………..is there anything I can use to stitch it back up again or maybe use a waterproof patch that I could use instead of sewing it up.
