I don’t know about you, but this time of year JUST.GETS.CRAZY! Between all the holiday planning, social events, school events, family gatherings, running this blog and my husband’s job – Oct, Nov, Dec always FLY by. Don’t get me wrong it’s 90% super fun stuff, it’s just busy! It’s easy for things like dinner to get pushed aside or take the easy route of take-out or going out. I love when I find a recipe that my family loves and is easy too! I’ve been making these Easy and Quick Whole Grain Breadsticks for years, but have never shared the recipe. Today is a lucky day for busy you, because I’m sharing the recipe and pairing it with STOUFFER’S® Lasagna with meat sauce for an easy, good for the family dinner that’s done in about an hour!Don’t let that hour time scare you! Most of that is cooking time, so you can be getting the other “stuff” done that you need to, or just spend time with the family while dinner is practically making itself! I love how STOUFFER’S® is an easy meal solution during this busy holiday season. You can find great deals on STOUFFER’S® at Walmart on Rollback (10/1-12/31).
Now let’s get to the other part of the meal, the easy and quick whole grain breadsticks. I should mention, you can make them with all white flour too, if you want, the recipe works great with both versions. Cook the lasagna as directed on the package and start the breadsticks, then you pop them into the oven for the last 20 min of bake time and they come out together!
Easy and Quick Whole Grain Breadsticks
Ingredients
- 1 TBS quick yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 tsp white sugar
- 2.5 cups bread flour {I used 1.5 whole wheat and 1 white}
- 2 TBS olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- Parmesan cheese for topping
Instructions
- In a medium bowl dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let sit 10 min. Stir in the salt, oil, seasoning, and flour stir until smooth. Knead with a mixer or your hand for 30 sec. Form a ball, let sit 10 min. Spread with your hands on greased sheet and score with a serrated knife to create the "sticks". Do not cut all the way through the dough, just about 3/4 way through. Let sit 10 min. Spray with olive oil cooking spray and top with parmesan cheese. Throw in the oven with the Lasagna for the final 20 min. The same temperature is fine. If cooking on own, cook at 420F {230C} for the 20 min. They cook best on the top rack.
I don’t have a mixer {wish I did} but I do love that this recipe doesn’t really require kneading. Just knead it a bit right in the bowl {30 sec} and that’s it!
Another super easy fact.. don’t roll out the dough. Just spread it out on a greased sheet until about 1/2 inch thick.
Because we scored the bread before baking, they bread about perfectly right out of the oven. The soft bread inside is just perfection, and the crunchy parmesan cheese on top adds a great contrast.Throw and easy salad together and bring the family together for a delicious meal that everyone will love. STOUFFER’S® Family Size Lasagna has five servings per box and was perfect for our family. With the breadsticks and salad it was a meal we all enjoyed.
