My boys LOVE smoothies.. yes, capital letters LOVE! We have yogurt for breakfast every morning and a few times a week I will whip up this healthy breakfast smoothie as well. My smoothie recipe changes depending on what frozen fruit I have on hand, but the basic recipe stays the same. I love making smoothies for my boys because I can fill it full of super healthy ingredients and my kids still think they are having a treat.
Let’s take a look what is inside that beautiful smoothie.
FRUIT:
I buy fruit when it goes on sale {when it’s on the edge of going bad} and put it straight in the freezer. This is a great way to stock up on fruit to freeze without breaking the bank. Shop the sales, shop in season and use what you have.
For this smoothie I used frozen mango, strawberries, and blueberries. I used a fresh banana {frozen are great too!}
VEGETABLE:
Yep, I always through at least one veg in our smoothies… trust me.. you can’t taste it!! This one has a 1/2 cup of squash puree in it. I also use sweet potato puree, dried kale flakes, frozen chopped spinach or even pumpkin puree. I’m sure you could hide just about anything, but this is what’s easiest for me and what I usually have on hand.
YOGURT and JUICE
I add a bit of OJ to the blender to help it blend smoothly. All the frozen ingredients tend to make it really thick, so you will need a thinner.
I make my own Yogurt… do YOU? I’ve been doing this for a couple of years now and we are totally hooked on the fresh stuff! It tastes SO great and you can monitor how much sugar is inside, which I love for my kids…. I use about a cup of fresh yogurt in this breakfast smoothie.
I use this Easiyo Maker, I love that you just add water to their packs… it might be pricey to get them in North America though. Here are a couple of other makers that get great reviews!
Plop it all in the blender and pulse… the berries can be tough depending on the power of your machine.
We like to eat with toast or sometimes the boys even pour this over a bowl of cheerios and eat like cereal. However you eat it, it will taste good!!!
