Last week I shared a super cozy sweater set sewing tutorial using free sewing patterns and a tutorial to create the flare pants. Well, now you have a FREE pattern to sew the flare pants and new need to modify another pattern to create the flare. {unless you want to!} I’m super excited about these knit flare pants free pattern… so here you go!
Flare Pants Pattern
How to sew sweater fabric {tips to get you started if you haven’t sewn with this type of fabric before}
When I shared the adorable sweater set last week, I had included a tutorial on how to hack a pattern to make cute flare pants. This got me thinking that I should just create a free flare pants pattern…. so here it is! Between all the pants patterns I’ve created over the years, it wasn’t hard to modify them to create this free flare pants pattern.
Please not that this pattern is intended only for knit fabrics and will even fit differently depending on the type of knit fabric used. You can see the difference in the fabric in this photos. The grey sweater knit and the purple french terry are the same size and pattern {exactly!} But, they fit differently… I love the looser look of the flowy sweater knit and created the pattern with that in mind, but I also wanted to sew up the other pair to show how they would look.
Now you can see what the end result will hopefully be, let’s dive into the sewing tutorial.
Free flare pants sewing pattern – for knit fabric
Supplies needed:
- 2/3 yard – 1.5 yards of fabric depending on size of pants
- 3/4″ wide elastic for waistband
- Serger {I used the Brother Airflow 3000}
- Sewing machine {I used my Brother Stellaire 2, but the SE2000 is another favorite of mine!}
- head over to my shop and print the free pdf pattern using the gray button below. Come back here to put the pant together. Printed pieces are just pattern.
Use the size chart here to determine size. If needing to add length, I would add at the middle of the calves and the middle of the thighs – equally.
Here is the layout guide for assembling the pattern pieces.

Ok! Like leggings these pants are so super easy to sew! All seams are a 3/8″ seam allowance and it has been included in the pattern. Sew all seams with a serger, zig-zag stitch or knit stitch so they are stretchy.
First, with right sides together, sew the curved crotch seams on the front and back of pants. Fronts together and backs together.
Then, sew the side seams together.
Now we will sew the inseam of the pants. Match the center seam in the middle of the legs, then ease down the legs to match the curves. Sew up one leg and down the other.
Turn under about 3/4″ hem and sew on a coverstitch machine or with a stretch stitch on a sewing machine.
With the points on the sides of the flares, you may have a little triangle to trim after hemming, I know I did.
You can use the casing or no casing method for adding elastic. Not sure what I mean? Check out my two methods for sewing waistbands tutorial here. Here sewed the elastic in a circle, then I quartered the elastic.
Using your Serger or zig-zag stitch, stretch and sew the elastic along the top of the pants. You can cut a bit of the pants off with your serger, but do not cut the elastic as it may affect the stretch. Stretch the pants to fit the elastic, do not stretch the elastic.
Fold over the elastic and fabric. Pin or clip to keep in place. Using a coverstitch, zig-zag or knit stitch, sew on the inside edge of the elastic, stretching the fabric as you sew. Try to sew right on the elastic edge.
I just use a classic zig-zag for this, but you can also use a “lightening” knit stitch.
Alternately, you may create a casing and thread the elastic through. Then you can repeat and make a few more pairs as they are so comfy!!
