inside: Sew up an adorable sweater set with two free sewing patterns. This cozy sweater set will keep you warm and in fashion all winter long. Use two free sewing patterns to create this cute look.
A few months ago I fell victim to a social media ad and ordered a cheap clothes set for my daughter. When it arrived it actually fit surprisingly well for how inexpensive it was, and the fabric has held up well too. From the beginning I was planning on trying to recreate the outfit myself and we finally did! Below I will show you the outfit I purchased, the one I made and the free patterns I used to recreate the look.
Matching Sweater Set sewing with free patterns
How cute is this matching lounge wear set? It’s made from the softest sweater fabric, but you could make it with any knit fabric. Side note…. did you see my post earlier this week on tips for sewing with sweater knit? Now is a great time to reference that before tackling this project. Tips for sewing with sweater knit – check it out now!
First up… how cute and cozy is this! I think I just want to live in this outfit. This is a Brushed Waffle sweater knit from Sincerely Rylee fabrics {it’s so soft and divine!} and it was just perfect for this project. Unfortunately, I just looked and it’s out of stock on the website… sorry! But, this works with any soft knit fabric.
On the left you will see my purchased inspiration piece. Rose has worn it quite a bit this fall and winter. She says there is another girl in her class with the exact same outfit, so apparently the social ad did well {haha!} On the right you can see my version. I tried to keep the basic look the same, although I did go for softer fabric. I would like to try my version with some quilted fabric like the green one, now that I have the patterns all worked out.
I created cute flared pants from my slim fit kids jogger pants. You will find a video tutorial below showing you how to convert the jogger to a flare. I may work on a flare pant free pattern and if I do I will update this post. The top is my amazing and versatile kids raglan with a hood. The original wasn’t raglan sleeves, but I think it works great here. All the patterns and how to use them are below!!

The flare pant tutorial was inserted right here below this text, but sometimes the inserted videos get moved to the sidebar as you scroll. So if you don’t see the video tutorial directly below here, check the side or scroll to find. This is something I am unable to change about my site. Please let me know if you have any questions and have fun sewing!!
How to sew a matching sweater set
Supplies needed:
Sweater knit fabric:
- 3-5 yards of fabric depending on size
- Free Kids Raglan pattern {Raglan tutorial post if needed}
- Free Kids hood pattern {here’s how to use it if needed}
- 3/4″ elastic for flare pants waistband
- Free slim fit jogger pattern {use video above to turn them into flare pants}
- I may create a free flare pants pattern in the future, but for now, use my tutorial to create cute flare pants with the video tutorial below.
Here are my pants cut out
These pants go together the same as any knit pants/leggings, but I’ll show the basic steps here as well. With right sides together, match the two front pieces together and the two back pieces together and sew the curved front and back crotch seams.
Place the front and back together and sew the side seams.
Match the center seam and sew the inseam from one ankle up the one leg and down the other.
Hem bottom of flare pants. I also put a label on the front of one of the legs so my daughter knows which is the front of the pants.
Add elastic to the waistband that is the size you need for the child you are sewing these pants for. Not sure how to add an elastic waistband? Here is a tutorial with two different ways to sew elastic. I used the no-casing method for these pants.
