I love a good refashion… Getting more use out of something I already have, or changing something to make it work better for me, all wins! Today I’m going to show you a pants to skirt refashion tutorial AND show off my new and lovely Valencia Tunic by Willow and Co Patterns. I’m wearing both in these photos, so I thought I would combine the post.
Before we get to the tutorial I just have to tell you that you can get the Valencia Tunic pattern on sale until tomorrow {Thursday. Don’t miss out. I made the unlined version, so I have to wear a tank under it, but I love it. I also used knit on the bottom and just hemmed it with a rolled hem. Here are a few of my favorite shots of the top.
I love the top lace yoke! I’ve been saving this yellow lace { I wish I had bought more!} and I just love how it works on this top.
Bottom hem..
and the back..
Now, your first thought might be that my skirt is pretty short {ha!} yes, it is… and I don’t mind, but I’ve also been wearing it with leggings and it’s perfect. BUT… the length will really depend on the style and fit of the pants you use for this refashion. The looser the legs, the longer you will be able to make your skirt. In general, I would say this will make a shorter skirt though.
Okay let’s get started on this pants to skirt refashion tutorial:
First find a pair of pants you want to turn into a skirt. use a seam ripper to take out the inseam.
I also ripped out a bit of the seam going up towards the zipper so I could straighten out this seam. You can see how the original was curved…
Fold the top piece of the pants under and smooth out the seam. Match the original seam as best as you can.
Pin this seam down as far as you can before the pants stat to narrow. NOTE: if you want a pencil skirt that does narrow you can go ahead and sew to
I double top-stitched this seam to match what was already there.
Now for the back… I removed the curved triangle from the back seam.
Then, just like the front, fold over the edge of the front side and pin down.
For additional length I folded under the sides of the inside seam to create a front slit. You can do this or just finish it with a straight hem. Finish the bottom hem with a serger or zig-zag.
Fold under a 1/2″ hem and sew. There you go!! I’d love to see the creations you make from your pants or long shorts…
What have you refashioned lately? Any good ideas to share?

I like it. If you wanted the skirt longer you could use the leftover pants leg fabric to fill in the gaps. I helped my cousin do that and it looks really cute.

thats a great idea too! it would be easy to add a patch in the middle where my slit it… thanks for stopping by!

I’m loving the refashion, especially the skirt. Too short, if you can pull it off wear it. If I were 50 pounds lighter I would, ha. I’m sure it’s just as cute with leggings. Thanks for sharing on Sunday’s Best. I’m loving your posts.

Great refashion, I love the skirt, especially going into summer, and I don’t find it too short either.
Thanks for sharing and the inspiration. Will have to look at some of my old pants now…
