inside: Get excited to sew this new wide leg pants free pdf pattern. With this free download you can sew up gorgeous and comfortable wide leg pants from any woven fabric. The wide leg pants pattern comes in sizes xs-4xl.
I bought a pair of wide leg linen pants last year, but when I washed them they shrunk so sort… and I’m not tall! I decided to sew my own pants so that I could control the length and make some out of amazing quilty fabric. I’m super happy with the wide leg pants pattern I created and today I’m sharing it with you for free.
Womens Wide Leg Pants
I mentioned last week that I’m sewing up a few fun clothing items to wear to the Houston quilt festival and these pants are another piece I wanted to sew. I think both versions I sewed last week turned out pretty cute.
I wanted to sew these in the quilt print fabric, but I sewed up the blue faux linen pair first as a test. I had to shorten the waist on the blue version, so the pocket openings got small. After some adjustments on the pattern and the print version turned out great.
This high waisted, wide leg pants pattern is designed for woven fabric and has two pockets on the front and two back pockets as well.
These pants have a 2″ wide elastic waistband and are semi-fitted through the waist and hips and then wide and loose through the legs.
I’m sure both of these versions are going to get a ton of wear. Looking forward to see what you sew with this pattern as well.

As stated on the pattern you will need 3 yards of woven fabric and a piece of 2″ wide elastic for this pattern. The smaller sizes you will have some left over, but with the length of the legs there is no was to use less yardage. Use this size chart to determine which size you will cut out.
How to sew wide leg pants for women-
I’m so thrilled with how these turned out. I love when my hard work pays off {haha} For me and for you! Cut out all pattern pieces as directed on the pattern pieces and let’s get sewing. Pants are perfect for women up to 5′ 7″, if you are taller, add length to the bottom of the pants. Make sure to cute the waistband as directed {there isn’t a pattern piece}
- Start with the pockets. Place the angled edge of the pants pocket along the angled edge of pants. With right sides together sew the pants front and pant pocket together.
- Fold the pocket over to the back of the pants and press. Top-stitch close to the angled edge seam.
Optional – add a double row of top-stitching on the edge of the pocket.
3. On the back side of the pants, place the pocket pouch on the pocket. Line up the curved edge of the pocket and pouch with right sides together. Sew the curves edge from top to side. Repeat with the other pocket.
4. Place both pants front pieces together with right sides touching and sew the front curved crotch seam. Open up the seam and top-stitch close to the seam. I like to set my stitch length at 3/3.5 for top-stitching.
5. With right sides together, place the back of the pants together and sew the curved crotch seam. Top-stitch the seam as with the front.
6. Finish all the edges of the back pocket with a serger or zig-zag stitch. Fold back and press the sides seam allowance. Pin the sides back.
7. Fold down the top 1″ of the pocket to the back side. Top-stitch the top of the pocket down at the edge of the fabric. Press back 1/4″ seam allowance on all edges of the pocket.
8. Measure out the pocket placement on the back side of the pants. For the sizes xs-m place the pocket 3″ down from the top and 2.5″ in from the center seam. Size l-2xl – 3.5″ from the top and 3″ from center. 3xl-4xl 4″ down from the top and 3.5″ from the center.
9. Line up the top and side of the pocket with your placement markings and pin the pocket in place. Make sure the seam allowance is fold back and under. Pin all sides {except the top} in place.
10. Sew sides and bottom of each pocket.
11. Place front and back of pants together and sew the side seams, then sew the inseam. Trim any uneven edges on the bottom of the pants.
tip- at this point try on the pants and see if you like where the pants hit your waist. This is a chance to trim any excess off the top if these pants are too high waisted for you.
12. Take the waistband strip of fabric and trim it to match the top of the pants. Sew the short ends of the waistband together. Fold the waistband in half so the long raw edges are together and line this up with the top of the pants. Sew the waistband to the pants, leaving an opening to thread the elastic.
13. Cut a piece of 2″ elastic the size to fit around your waist. Thread the elastic into the casing and when you get all the way around sew the ends together.. Sew the elastic opening closed. Try on to make sure sure the fabric is evenenly gathered around the waistband.
14. Top-stitch the elastic in place by sewing around the top and bottom of the elastic. Stretch the fabric as you sew to avoid fabric puckers.
15. Finished the raw edges of the pants bottom and hem up a 1″ hem. Make sure to try on pants and hem to the desired legnth.
You did it! Enjoy your amazing new pants! here’s one more link to download the free pattern if you missed the one at the top.

Hello! The blog posts say that the pattern goes up to 4XL but on the PDF it only goes up to 2XL. How do we modify the pattern for 3 and 4XL?
Thanks.
