Today is an exciting day for me! I’ve been planning this outfit since summer and am SO happy with how it turned out. I’m part of two sewing series today Crafting Con-Hunger Games over at Friends Stitched Together and Mae and K. There is a whole other post on FST that you can check out for LOTS more photos! AND Marissa of Rae Gun Ramblings is hosting a Hunger Games series as well. Enter the Hunger games giveaway at the end of this post.
And now… my amazing Hunger Games Gail inspired outfit! oh and this is my son’s model pose {ha!} I posted my Hunger Games inspiration photo in my other post… don’t miss it here.
You can read all the details about patterns and fabrics on Friends Stitched Together. I’m going to show off a few more photos in this post, then give you the pattern and tutorial to make cargo pants pockets. I’ve got a free cargo pocket pattern printable for you as well.
I really don’t like buttons or button holes.. which is why this shirt is all snaps!
Aren’t the pockets amazing? They were not part of the original pattern… I used a pair of cargo pants that my boys already have to create fun side and back pockets for these pants.
Love it!
Ok, let’s take a closer look at the pants and pockets. The pockets and waistband are a different color and slightly softer fabric. I also added a but more stitching detail to the fly area.
My son is a bean pole {he doesn’t get that from me!!} so I still have to elastic in his pants. The pocket pattern has been edited to make the top flaps not so wide. Here they are wider than the pocket and I didn’t love it. I’ve changed this on the pattern I’ve got for you.
Same with the side pockets.. I love them, and the pleat in the middle, but the flap is too wide.. I’ve changed that for you! The pockets can be fastened with a snap, button or velcro.. your choice!
Ok… go print the free cargo pocket pattern and your favorite boys pants pattern and let’s get started! You should have eight pattern pieces. Four pockets and four flaps. This pattern was made for a 6T, but could easily be made a bit smaller or larger for your pants size.
Let’s start with the side pockets. Fold and pin on the dotted pattern line.
Turn over and fold back to create the pleat. Fold the pleat open on the back side of the pattern.
Sew a zig zag two inches from the top and one inch from the bottom.
For the back pockets, fold under 1/4 inch on the dotted pattern line and zig zag in two places.
Sew around the pocket flap, with right sides together. Leave one side open to turn. Turn, top-stitch and add a button hole, snap or velcro.
Serge or zig zag around the outside of the pockets. Iron over 1/4 inch around three sides and 1/2 inch at the top of the pockets.
Top-stitch 1/2 inch from top of pocket like pockets on the left. I did a second line for looks only.
Add your button, snap or velcro to the pocket and match it up with the pocket flap. The flap should extend around an inch above the top of the pocket. This will allow you to actually get into the pocket.
NOTE: You will want to sew the back pockets on before you sew the front and back pants together. Also, for the side pockets, sew the outer side seam before the inseam.
I knit this sweater vest and I LOVE it… it fits perfect with my inspiration picture and I think will be cozy for this winter. I’ve used this pattern before, but this time added a wide collar instead of the hood on the original.
Of course there were tons of not so great photos…. here are a few outtakes… Now, get entering the giveaway and don’t forget to head over to Rae Gun Ramblings and Friends Stitched Together for more Hunger Games fun! I’m seeing the movie on the 29th! My husband and I are planning a date to see the movie and eat Indian food…. mmmm
