Laptop Case Sewing Tutorial
 I’m making an informal travel week here on the blog, starting with this pretty laptop tutorial. My husband has a conference in Thailand and our family is tagging along. I feel like we used to travel so light… but now with kids and blogging… we have to take all our gadgets with us! I just got a new computer and I want to protect it, so I made this cute quilted cover for it. I’ve been saving this fabric for something, I just wasn’t sure what… but this was the perfect project to use it.

Lets start by measuring your computer. Mine is a 14 laptop, but actually measured 13 1/2 by about 9 1/2 as you can see in the photo. In the end I think you can just add two inches to your size for fabric cutting.

ie: 14″ laptop = cut 16″
11″+ cut 13″… ect…
You want to cut a large rectangle, then fold in half. So sizing… for my 14″ computer I cut 22×32″, folded in half 16 x 22″ the {the computer was 14 x 10} so you have a double layer rectangle with two inches extra on the cut.
You will also need a zipper 12-14″ in length.
Pocket {optional} I cut 21 x 14, folded in half 14 x 10 1/5.
Buttons or velcro to close pocket {optional}
If you want to give it some padding for travel, stick some batting in the middle of those two fabric layers.
You can “quilt” it however you like, straight lines or follow a pattern.. I tried to go around the flowers… I was semi-successful, but I am glad the print is busy and you can’t really see my sewing.
Prepare your optional pocket by sewing right sides together around three sides, leaving a small opening for turning. Turn. I top-stitched this side and made it my top.
Now its time to think about what you want for a pocket closure. You could to velcro as I demonstrate in my big travel portfolio tutorial. Since this one is for just me… I wanted to use fun buttons. BEFORE you sew the pocket on, create the button holes, sew the velcro, or {other?} to close the pocket. I made two button holes.
Next, lay your pocket on top of you quilted {three layer} rectangle and space it evenly. You can fold the rectange in half to see where the edge will be. Place your pocket top towards the raw fabric edge. {bottom of the photo}
Sew around the pocket on three side. Now lets close up this case. I used a zipper long enough to go the length of the short side and around the corner. Pin to one side and sew with a zipper foot. Right sides together.
 
Un-zip the zipper and put to the right side of the other end of the rectangle. Pin and Sew. Then, turn the case right sides together {zipper on the outside} and sew along the two short sides. Make sure to catch the fabric by the zipper to close the side completely.
This is what the inside by my zipper looked like. I wanted a cleaner edge, so I folded the zipper inwards…
Like this… then stitched along both sides of the zipper to keep it down.

For the final step, sew the buttons or attach snaps to close the pocket…

and.. waaala!! awesome girly laptop case for my upcoming trip.
the pocket is perfect for my external hard drive and blogging calendar.
 Once again I had my handy side kick helping out with the photos…
