inside: A fun color your own dress DIY project with super fun color me fabric. A great sewing project for adults and kids.
Kids love to color! And this color your own dress is a great gift AND a super fun activity. I first made this years ago, but it’s still a great idea and this Christmas I’m make SIX of these for my nieces.. I first made this for my oldest niece and now she’s too old for this color your own dress, but the others are the perfect age. You can find lots of fun color me fabric on Etsy HERE.
Color your own dress –
It all started with this color your own doll dress. I had so much fun with that little color your own dress, that I made a girl size one and a second doll dress. You can scroll down to see my original dress, but I love the newest versions as well. Since Christmas some of my neicest have almost completed the coloring dress.
When I give this type of dress for a gift I always include the fabric markers as well. Here are the fabric markers I just purchased for my Nieces.. They have held up really well, even for the twins who are sharing a single pack of markers and have almost finished coloring.
I think 6/7 is the perfect age to give this gift. Still old enough to like coloring, but also old enjoy to do a good job. On the new dresses I left the zippers exposed and love the results.
It’s very hard for me to let Rose color her own dress and not want to step in and do it {right} {haha} I have to make my own color me fabric inspired projects so that I can do all the coloring myself.
Color Me Fabric –
Here’s another link to a bunch of color me fabric options on Etsy.
The girls haven’t colored as much on the back of the dresses, but they are really coming along. I purchased three different fabrics to make six dresses for Christmas gifts and you can see all three fabrics here. I also liked using a solid/print fabric for the sleeve pieces to add some fun design to the dress.
When I made the first dress I used the Sally Dress pattern. You can read more about this dress pattern here. It a great dress and super fun to make! Have you seen this IKEA fabric and the fun projects other are sewing with it? What would you make with this color it fabric? For my new ones I’m using THIS DRESS pattern. I don’t have many patterns that work with Woven Fabric, but the Sweet Rose dress is a free one of mine that works with woven.

I love your dress! I hope I can get that fabric at my local IKEA. I will have to wait a little to make the dress though… my 4-year-old loves to color, but her coloring style is…adventurous right now ๐

HA! I know what you mean.. if a four year old colored this… only a four year old would wear that creation ;o) in a couple years she will be perfect for it!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this idea. My little girl isn’t quite old enough to color yet, but I’m pinning this one so that I have it in safe keeping. ๐ It was great seeing you at #notjustahousewife link party.
