Make this easy Felt Mug Cozy DIY for a simple and easy project with felt.
Did you know January is hot tea month? I’m celebrating by drinking tea all day long! {haha!} I’m out and about all the time, so I take my tea with me and am loving my new felt mug cozy DIY. I also made some cute felt tea bag holders so I can have tea whenever or where ever I am. Bigelow is also sponsoring a HUGE sweepstakes {think Ipad or hotel stay!} – so scroll to the bottom to enter… its’ easy to play!!
I’m a morning coffee drinking, but all day tea drinker and when its cold out I drink tea several times a day. I love Bigelow Tea and the Vanilla Chai is keeping me warm on my afternoon school runs. I have to stand in an open courtyard for school pickup so a warm tea in my hand is essential! I take my tumbler or water bottle and tea bags in my purse… then when I get there I add hot water and enjoy my tea while waiting for my boys to come out. Mmmmm
I’m going to share a simple felt mug cozy DIY today. I’ll show you how to customize it to fit whatever water bottle, mug or tumbler you are using to enjoy your tea. I use both this BPA-free water bottle and tumbler for my tea, so I made a felt cozy for both. First, you want to measure around your bottle. If you bottle has a small-to-larger shape measure in the middle. Draw out on paper a rectangle with the circumference +.5″ being the length and the height about 3.5″. If your bottle is the shaped kind you will want to curve the top and bottom lines UP as shown in the green pen. Also slant in the sides of the shape. The +.5″ is the seam allowance for the closure. Cut and test your paper pattern to make sure it fits before you cut it from felt. Cut 2 if you want a double layer.
Add some cute decorations with other felt or simple embroidery.
I just used hot glue to add the blue hearts. You could also use craft glue if you allow it time to dry.
You can use button or velcro for the closure. I’ll show you one of each. For the buttons, sew them to the edge of one short end of felt cozy. On the other short end cut small slits for the button holes. Measure on the tumbler for button hole placement and fit.
On this blue mug/tumbler cozy I did a double layer by hot gluing two layers of felt together.
I glued velcro to opposite sides on the short ends.
I tested both on my bottles and they stay great!
Okay, now let’s make one final item for on the go tea success! A cute felt tea bag cozy! You will need a piece of felt a bit wider than your tea bag and about 3x as long.
Fold over the end of the felt to see the size of the bottom part that holds the tea.
Cut a rounded flap on the top.
Sew or glue up the sides and add a button to close. Sew the button on the main part of the felt bag, then cut a little slit in the rounded flap.
There you go! Everything you need to make your own Felt Mug Cozy DIY and a little felt bag to hold your tea bags for on the go tea time.
