Use this fabric basket tutorial to make a gorgeous and useful basket made with fabric! The hunt is on for cute Spring Decor at my house and so I love that this fabric basket is useful {hold treats} AND makes a lovely centerpiece on our table. I’ve got a free template so you can use this fabric basket tutorial to make a basket for you home {or a gift}
Fabric Basket Tutorial – with Template
I’ve got a free downloadable template for you to make this fabric basket, but if you want a slightly differently shape you can make your own, just use the same general concept. I had tasty Easter treats in mine over the weekend and now I have paper napkins in it. It’s a great centerpiece for the table, no matter what you put inside. The snaps on the basket make it collapsible as well and it lays flat for storage.
Other Easter Projects to try –
Let’s get started with this fabric basket tutorial.. You will need…
- Cotton Fabric, fat quarters work great!
- Fusible Foam {for stability},
- and snaps.. or buttons or hook and loop…
You can also find out information for my spring themed treats by clicking the photo below. Go download and PRINT the template HERE or using the button below.
Use the provided template to cut out TWO fabric pieces and and ONE of fusible foam. The foam should be 3/8″ {1cm} smaller than the fabric on all sides. You can see when its’s fused to the fabric that there is seam allowance all around foam.
How to sew a Fabric Basket
With right sides together pin the two fabrics together. Leave around a 4 inch gap on one straight side for turning. Sew with a 1/4 to 3/8 seam allowance.
After you sew, clip all the corners.
Turn the piece right side out. You will have an opening on one side.
Fold the raw edges in and pin. Top-stitch to close the opening and around the rest of the edge to finish. I sewed very close to the edge.
You can use velcro or a button for this step, but I used plastic snaps. Place a snap on each of the outer tabs. The snaps should be in the center of the tab and towards the end. You can fold up the fabric to see where you want to place the snap.
Here is with the snaps on the end of the tabs..
You could also have more overlap and place the snaps further in.
Isn’t this fabric basket adorable? It’s reversible, useful, and folds down flat for storage.

this is great, I’m going to use this pattern to create bread baskets, I will use Insulbrite instead/in addition to the fusible foam. Then when not in use, they can be stored flat. Thank you for sharing this pattern.

I agree, I am unable to find the PDF even though I was sent this link. Maybe we will see it later. It was a great idea and basket.
Thank you!

OMG!!! You just solved a problem for me. FUSIBLE FOAM!!! i had never heard of it until this moment. It’s like you don’t know until someone shows you. I made a purse last year, and this would have been ideal and easier to use. You know what I did for bottom stabilizing of the purse? I cut up the sides of a plastic milk jug, lol. It was free and I could not think of any other material to use in my limited knowledge. Now I know! 1,000 thank yous. You have my head spinning about ways I can adapt your pattern. Purses, storage bins, shopping bags. It’s like a whole new world of possibilities has been opened!

Thanks for a great post, and YES, this basket can be made to work with any decor theme. I’m thinking about a hot cocoa basket for cold months. Also, the idea as napkin holder is perfect. Also, use to hold hand sewn coasters…so many opportunities right here. Good job.

I’m going to use this pattern to make bread baskets, substituting/adding Insulbrite for/to the fusible foam. They can then be flattened for storage when not in use. https://penaltykickonline.com
