Cube Zipper Case – Back to School with Post-it®

I love sewing little zipper cases and today I’ve got a cute cube zipper case tutorial for you. The summer is flying by! I can hardly believe it’s mid-July and that my kids will be back to school in less than a month. Walmart is telling me it’s time for back to school shopping every time I step foot in the store, so I decided to to a little back to school sewing and make a cute little cube zipper case. This little case is perfect for the 3×3 Post-it® Super Sticky Cube that is a back to school {and at home!} essential for us. I use Post-it® Notes for everything and the cube is the perfect size. I thought this zipper case was a a fun way to store my notes and a good way for the kids to take to school.

It was fun to figure out how to make this cube zipper case and since I think you can never have too many zipper cases, I made up a couple. {haha} When you stock up on your back to school supplies at Walmart consider making this cube pouch or my other zipper pouches to hold your back to school supplies. Post-it® Notes should be on your shopping list both for the kids going to school and moms! And now you can make a fun case to keep them in, both on the go at school/work or at home.

While I’m making these cute cube zip pouches for back to school, you really could use them for so many things. I’ve been thinking about enlarging the template so I could use it for more of a makeup bag when I travel. Fun? Right?

How to sew a cube zipper case sewing tutorial

Let’s sew! Grab your supplies… fabric scraps, zipper {at least 10″ long}, elastic… Download and print the TEMPLATE here. It fits the Post-it® Super Sticky Cube perfectly, but you can adjust the size as needed…

Cut out two pieces of fabric from the template. I used coordinating fabric.

Fold each corner with the right sides together and sew with a 3/8″ {1 cm} seam allowance.

Sew all four corners on your fabric that will be the outer and three corners on the inside fabric. Sew only the top 1/2″ on the fourth corner. This will be the opening that we will use to turn the case right side out after sewing together.

You now have two separate cubes.

On the flap part of the outer fabric place the zipper with right sides together. The zipper should over hang from the flap about 1/2″ on each end. Trim if longer than that. Open the zipper and pin or clip around the flap edge. Sew close to zipper teeth to secure. You will have to ease around the corners.

Now you have the zipper on one part of the cube.

Sandwich the zipper between both fabrics with the right sides of the fabric together and the zipper in the middle. Sew again around the edge.

Take the OTHER side of the zipper and pin or clip around the top of the cube three sides. I did this step with both fabrics together in one step. The zipper should be between the two layers and you will be sewing around three sides of the cube.

Here is the zipper between the fabric. Sew around the three sides of the cube close to the zipper teeth. The bit of extra zipper on both ends should be sticking out on the wrong side of the fabric so when you turn it will be inside.

After sewing around, carefully pull the fabric through the hole we left on the one side. With a needle and thread, fold under the seam allowance and sew up the side of the cube. This will be tucked inside the cube.

On the outside of the cube you can add elastic for pencils/markers or other school supplies.
