When fall rolls around I made a big batch of homemade salted caramel and then we use it for frosting, apple cider and dips all season long. This salted caramel cream cheese frosting recipe today using the caramel and is amazing on all your fall desserts.
Caramel Cream Cheese Frosting
Cream cheese frosting is always my favorite, but in the fall adding a bit of homemade salted caramel to it makes it perfection. I will share the recipes here for both the salted caramel and the frosting today.

Homemade Salted Caramel
If you have never made homemade caramel before there is a bit of a learning curve. You can see on the video how much I stir the sugar when it’s cooking. That’s because I’ve had burnt homemade caramel before and let’s just say it’s not yummy. {haha}
The ingredients for caramel are super easy to get your hands on, and even when I lived in Hong Kong and couldn’t buy caramel I could get all these ingredients.

Salted Caramel Frosting Recipe
Now that our glorious caramel is ready, let’s make the frosting! You can always use caramel you buy as well to make this recipe a quicker one.
Mix all the ingredients with an electric mixer until perfectly smooth..
I like to just use a zip-lock bag for frosting, but you can spread or use a piping bag as well to top your bread or cupcakes… **Note I will often half the frosting recipe if I am just making one dozen cupcakes. The full frosting recipe is enough for two dozen.
Just clip the corner of the bag for easy frosting application!!
Salted Caramel Cream Cheese Frosting
a deliciously fall recipe for homemade caramel frosting that is amazing on bread, cupcakes or by the spoonful!
Ingredients
- Salted Caramel Sauce:
- 1 cup of sugar
- 6 tablespoons of butter
- 1/2 cup of cream
- 1/2 tablespoon of coarse sea salt
- Salted Caramel Frosting:
- 2 sticks of butter
- 8 ounces of cream cheese
- 2 cups of powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup of caramel sauce {homemade or bought}
Instructions
- Salted Caramel how to:
In a saucepan over med-high heat the sugar dry - stir, stir, stir
first it will clump together, and then it will begin to bubble and melt- stir OFTEN
when it is melted and golden in color (do not to burn) add the butter all at once
this will sputter so be careful
when the butter is melted add the cream and stir well
finally, remove from heat add in the salt
let cool a bit and then pour into a jar with a tight fitting lid
2. Frosting:
cream together the butter and cream cheese, add in the caramel and powdered sugar -blend well
once cool frost the cupcakes
