You may have noticed by now that I really like skirts…. I like making them and I like wearing them. This winter, I’ve made a new one out of wool and I’m loving it. It doesn’t get snowy here, but I can wear a nice cozy wool skirt. This wool skirt pattern is pretty easy to make and I’ve got a step by step tutorial for you.
I saw something like this in a shop and decided to make my own version. It is a basic gathered skirt with a waistband. The sash around the waist is the extra part that gives it style. You can have the tie on the side or middle, where ever you would like.
Ok, let’s dive into the wool skirt pattern and tutorial.
You will need 1 to 1 1/2 yards of thin wool fabric. I used 1 1/2″ elastic.
Measure yourself at the waist_______ {or where you want the skirt to sit} From there to your knee_____ {or how long you want it to go} and at the widest place of your bottom________{as shown below} You will need to pull the skirt up over this part, so make sure to measure the largest. Now…
Take Waist + another 1/2 again. EX…. 31 + 16 =47″ This will be the width of what you cut
Waist to Knee + 2″ EX… 18 + 4 = 22″
Widest hips + 2 EX… 38 +2= 40″
these are the numbers you will need to cut your fabric. I’ll be using my measurements in the example below, but please change the numbers to your measurements.
Cut a rectangle of fabric with the long side being your waist + 1/2 again {47″} and the short side being the waist to knee {22″} Sew the back seam {the short side}. Gather the top of your skirt to your hip measurement + 2″. If you need gathering tips I recently wrote this post.
Cut the waistband. It should be your hips + 2″ x 4 3/4″ . So a long thin piece. Sew the short ends.
Fold the waist band long sides together and pin {right sides together} around the skirt. They should be the same diameter.
Sew the waistband to the skirt. Leave a 4″ gap to thread the elastic through the waistband.
You may need to pick out some of your gathering stitches if you can still see them.
Measure the elastic and thread through the waistband casing. Sew the ends of the elastic and close up the hole you had left.
Top Stitch around the waistband, folding the seam allowance up to catch in the top-stitching. Stretch as you sew, so it doesn’t pucker or tuck while sewing.
Cut the sash 5″ wide by long enough to go around you waist and tie… I used the width of my fabric.
Sew the sash right sides together, cut the ends on a diagonal. Leave one end open to turn.
Turn right sides out and top-stitch around the outside and close the open end.
This is best done on {but that makes it tricky if you are by yourself too!} Pin the sash to the back center seam and tack it there. Decide where you want your sash to tie before you tack the back.
I also sewed the elastic in a few places around the waistband to keep it from twisting.
Put it on and tie the sash… If the sash doesn’t stay in place you can tack it in a few more places. I also did mine on the sides.
Pair it with your favorite tights and scarf and stay warm, but look great this winter! Please let me know if you have any questions.. I’m happy to help or explain more.

Super Cute skirt!!! Can this skirt be lined, so it doesn’t cling to leggings or tights when you walk? Would it just be cutting a second “skirt” in a lining material (satin or nylon) and the loosely stitching the finished lining to the side seams and waist? I have never lined s skirt and have no idea how to do it, and I am afraid the lining might make the skirt fabric pucker or not lay right. Thanks.
