Do you celebrate Chinese New Year with your family? Having lived in Asia, we like to take a few bits of the holiday that we really like and celebrate with them. One of the things we like most about Asia is the FOOD! My recipe today celebrates our love of Asian food, red packets and keeps my kids in mind. I’ve come up with three Asian style dips that are the perfect complement to Tai Pei® frozen appetizers and perfect for celebrating the new year! AND it’s fun to eat them out of red packets {which aren’t always red!}
Tai Pei® frozen Spring Rolls and Egg Rolls come with their own delicious sauce, and I’ve created three other different sauces so you can really celebrate with loads of options. Chinese New Year is the perfect time to throw a party and wish others “good fortune” in the new year ahead. Red Packets are a very traditional way to wish others blessings in the new year and it’s customary to pass them out to children {and even single adults!} with money inside during this time of year. Today I’m taking this sign of good fortune and putting a tasty snack inside for a tasty way to celebrate. Did you know it will be the year of the Sheep? We don’t have any Sheep in our family {roosters, rats, and tigers around here} you can find your animal year here.
Tai Pei® appetizers can be found in the frozen section of Walmart and come in a wide variety of flavors to suit every taste, chicken, pork, shrimp, and vegetable. We really liked the Tai Pei® mini Spring Rolls, they were perfect for dipping! We like to dip our Spring Rolls and Egg Rolls in Honey Soy, Sweet Chili Cheese { I know cheese isn’t very Asian, but did you see that I put cheese in my sushi too?} and Peanut Sauce. All three of these were great with the rolls, but you could use on noodles or other Asian style dishes too.
Tai Pei® Egg Rolls AND Spring Rolls are full of flavorful meat and tasty veggies. The are really bursting with the filling, which makes them very flavorful. Tai Pei® Good Fortune in Every Box™ Plus, they were so easy to make, which I love when I’m making party food!
Ok, let’s get to the dip recipes, but first, let’s talk about a few basic Asian style dip ingredients…. Can you identify the list on the right with the ingredients in the picture? None of these are too crazy, but they are all essential to good Asian flavors.
Asian Dips
Ingredients
- Honey Soy Dip
- 1/3 Cup Honey
- 1/3 cup Soy Suace
- 1/4 c. rice vinegar
- 1/2 tsp minced garlic
- 2 tsp minced ginger
- Sweet Chili Cheese
- 4 Oz soft cream cheese
- 3 TBS sweet chili sauce
- Asian Peanut Sauce
- 1/2 c. peanut butter
- 3 TBS soy sauce
- 2 TBS chicken broth
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp minced garlic and 1 ginger
- squirt lemon/lime juice
Instructions
- For the Honey Soy dip, just whisk all ingredients together in a bowl.
- The cream cheese dip will need to be stirred until thoroughly mixed.
- For best results put the peanut sauce ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
If you don’t want to serve in the red packets, on a plate works great too! The great flavor is still there!
For those of you who don’t live near a large Asian population to buy red packets, I’ve created a printable that you can easily print or red {or any color} paper and use for your spring rolls and Asian style dips. You can print it here: Red Packet Printable
You can find a fun Chinese New Year app on the Tai Pei® Facebook page. There is even a Red Envelope tab which has a coupon and will run until coupons run out. You also check out their Pinterest boards for tasty inspiration.

Egg rolls are so fun, and so delicious, but they are so time consuming to make from scratch. Great ideas here for dipping sauces!

My Mother-in-law is Vietnamese, so she hands our kids a red packet with money every Chinese New Year. I make her dipping sauce which is vinegar, fish sauce, a little chili garlic sauce, water , and a little sugar. No measurements–just trial and error 🙂 She also includes ginger for fish. Your dips look great!
