Hi all! It’s Friday… and for us it’s the last day before a holiday. We have our mid term break next week and we are looking forward to it. To kick off the holiday I’m sharing a free pattern! I’ve reworked the summer t-shirt and here’s a Boys Long Sleeve T-Shirt Free Pattern that is great for fall winter. The free pdf pattern comes with two sleeve options, regular and layered. Oh and I’ve also included an optional cuff if desired.
I made the regular sleeves for these fun pjs for Jack and the layered option as a play shirt for Max.
Here is the size chart for the T-shirt… This shirt is a loose fitting shirt perfect for play {or sleep!} If you want a more tight fit shirt {like for sleepwear} you will want to size down.
I didn’t size down for my pjs, because I wanted to show the actual fit…but next sleep shirt I would size down one for Jack. These Pjs turned out so cute… AND totally free patterns for both top and bottom. The pants are my Boys Mesh Pants Pattern, made with a woven. I’m going to put all the pattern links right here, so they can be found all in one place. To recreate these two shirts and the pj pants you will need – Short Sleeve piece from Summer T-Shirt HERE, Mesh Pants Pattern for Pj Pants HERE, and the new Boys Long Sleeve T-Shirt Free Pattern HERE.
Some pretty realistic fake sleeping photos! These new Pjs look pretty cozy for winter. I’ve used the optional cuff on the Pj shirt.
I love the look of layered sleeves without the bulk of actually wearing to shirts. {note} I did take in the t-shirt neckline slightly after seeing these photos.
Okay! Let’s get to making these shirts! If you want to use the cuffs, start by cutting 1″ off the sleeves. Then, fold the cuffs together, with wrong sides touching. The direction of greatest stretch should be going from side to side on the cuff. Sew to sleeve edge, stretching as you sew.
If not adding the cuff, turn under 1/2″ and hem the bottom of the sleeve.
Sew shoulder seams with right sides together.
For the neck ribbing you can use more of the same t-shirt fabric- I often do this! For contrast on these shirts I used actual ribbing fabric in contrast color. Sew the short ends together right sides together.
Fold the ribbing together, wrong sides touching so you have a thin neck ribbing.
With the ribbing seam in the back center {or shoulder seam} pin evenly around neckline, stretching ribbing to fit. Depending on your ribbing fabric stretch you may have to shorten it and then re-pin around.
Sew ribbing on the shirt, then turn up and topstitch. I love to use a double needle with Woolly Nylon thread in the bobbin. The stretch is amazing and I love the look too! {yes, I used black serger thread on this shirt… it was left from the last project and I have such trouble changing colors… so I didn’t change for this project}
Open up the shoulder seam and match edges of sleeve to edges of opening on shirt. Pin up to the middle. Make sure to match up the back to the back and the front to the front. Sew.
Sew the sleeve seam and shirt side seam {again… opps on the black serger thread… but at least you can see it well, right?}
I like to secure the threads on the ends of the sleeve. Hem the shirt with a 1″ hem and you are finished!
For the second version with the double layer sleeve, you will want to prepare both the short and long sleeves from the two patterns {the short sleeve pattern pieces are on the short sleeve pattern} Hem the ends and sew up the side seam. You now have two prepared sleeves. You will also want to sew up the side seams on your shirt body.
Match up the sleeves so the back of the short one is with the back of the long one and put together right sides out like this.
With the right sides of the sleeve and the right side of the shirt together.. AND matching up the back and fronts, pin the sleeve. Sew.
Pull right side out and you are finished!! You could also add a cuff AND a double layer sleeve if you want to be really adventurous! {ha!}
Of course a few outtakes… {ha!}
For some reason Jack thought these pjs needed Egyptian arms… In a few poses…
I hope you can find many, many ways to use this free shirt pattern in your home. I love photos and I hope you will join the pattern group on FB to show off your photos! Here’s one final link to go DOWNLOAD the free long sleeve t-shirt pattern.

Thank you so much for all 3 patterns on this page – I am making pjs for my 5 grandchildren right now – and this T shirt top is awesome and my grandboys will love those mesh pants too.

Is there a way to do the side seams neatly without a serger? I’m using this to make a mock chainmail shirt for my son’s costume, and the outside of the fabric is a bit scratchy. The inside is soft, but I didn’t want the seams to have the scratchy fabirc on the inside once I flipped it right-side-out. Any suggestions?

Thank you. COuld you post how much fabric needed? I’m sure that is hard with differing sizes, but it would be so helpful.
