Set up the fires for mountain pie recipes –
You will want to start a fire and let it burn down a bit until you have hot coals. You can set the cooker right in the coals or find a way to lift it a few inches off the coals as well. It usually only takes about 5 min on each side to cook your dessert, but could be less if you have it too hot. Medium heat is best so that the dough gets fully cooked and you still don’t burn your treat.
It does take a bit of practice, but if you have some experience with cooking over an open fire you know there are not exact methods to cooking with coals/flames. So coals are best and sometimes you will even need to lift the pie maker off the coals a few inches.
Ok! Let’s make some camp pies and camping dessert recipes!
These are all super simple camping dessert ideas. None of them take much time or tricky ingredients and all of these call for ingredients that can easily be taken camping if you are making them while actually camping.
The common ingredient in all these camping desserts… BUTTER, or something else to grease the pie iron so these tasty desserts don’t stick.
- Chocolate Crescent Rolls – You will need butter, crescent roll tube and some form of chocolate. You can cook two rolls at a time in each pie maker. Grease both sides of the pie maker with butter {or other} Place a chocolate square in the middle and roll it up. Place two rolls in you pie iron and then close up. Cook on coals for a few minutes on each side until dough is cooked through and chocolate is melted.
2. Most traditional Hobo Pie – Using bread and filling is what I consider the most traditional of camping pies, and I do have one dessert using these items. For this type of pie with bread, I butter the actual bread, rather than greasing the iron. Generously butter one side of the bread. Place the buttered side towards the pie cooker.
Place a couple of spoonfuls of pie filling {or jam or fresh fruits} in the middle. Toast over the fire until browned. Cut in half and enjoy!
3. Pie crust treat – This was a new trial for me and I was pretty excited with the result. This is another way to use your pie filling {or jam, fruit, etc}. Cut two iron sized squares from a pre-made pie crust. Grease the pie irons and place one side of the crust down.
Add some filling and then a second crust. Close the pie maker and cook over the campfire until cooked through and browned on both sides.
4. Cinnamon Rolls – This could be a dessert or fun breakfast! Just grab a roll of cinnamon rolls and cook in a pie maker! Grease both sides of the pie iron… Place two small cinnamon rolls, or one jumbo roll in the iron and close. Cook evenly on both sides over hot coals. Frost! eat! Yum!
5. Camping Chocolate Cake – This is one of my favorite life hacks… It’s not just for camping! When I was in college {many years ago!} I learned that you can replace the eggs and oil in a box mix with a can of carbonated soda! Did you know that?
You can change the flavor by adding orange or cola or whatever you like. I just wanted chocolate cake so we use sprite. I used a bag to mix it up to avoid dished AND because you can just cut a corner off the bag and squeeze the batter right into a greased pie iron.
I put about 1/4 of the box of cake mix in a bag and then about 1/2 small can of the sprite. You want to mix it to a thick batter, not too thin or thick. Cut a corner off of the bag and squeeze the batter right into the pie maker.
Close and cook over a fire until you have perfect Chocolate cake. Bring on the ice cream!!
Ok! So that’s my list of easy Easy Camping Desserts. What would you add to this? I like that all of these can be made in a pie maker. If we open up our baking options we will have a much much bigger list but this is a fun place to start. ENJOY!!
