I love wearing earrings. I also love making them. Over the years I’ve made many, many styles of DIY earrings and today I’ve got another fun earring tutorial for you. I’m going to show you these leather earrings to make, but there are so many fun ways to make your own earrings.
Simple Leather Earrings to Make
I’ve been wanting to make leather earrings in this style for a long time. It’s been awhile since I made new earrings, and it was time! With summer here I love wearing large statement earrings and leather is perfect for big earrings because it’s so light.
Gorgeous right?

Let’s get making!!
Gather your supplies..
- Where to buy leather I used real leather for this project, but you can also use pleather.
- Where to buy faux leather
- Earring hooks
- Jump Rings
- Scan N Cut or other electronic cutting machine
You can complete this tutorial with any electronic cutting machine. I am using the Scan N Cut DX. I would suggest that cutting leather with a cutting machine is WAY simpler if it has an auto-blade sensing feature like the DX.
I also added a high tack adhesive sheet to my mat to make it EXTRA sticky. This helps hold the thick leather in place while cutting. Use the stickiest mat you have. {haha} Also, make sure to place the leather smooth side down.
I designed my leather shape using the Brother Canvas Workspace software. {its free to download} My earrings are about 1/2″ x 4″. Some are a bit wider or thinner, and you can adjust the size. I created rectangles in workspace, then transferred them to my machine via wifi.
Here is how to retrieve the files and use on your machine.
- Retrieve data
- Use the wifi option
- You should see your design on the screen. Two identical rectangles. Make sure your leather on the mat lines up with where the shapes are on the screen.
- Choose what you want to do, cut
- Push start
The leather should separate easily from the sheet. Sometimes my extra sticky backing sheet gets cut too, but I try to stick it back down and not peel up so I can use again.
Cut out several earrings if you want and then move onto the next steps. I have two different methods for you to make these simple leather earrings. One is sewn and one is punched. Both are described in detail below and shown in the video.
Sewn Leather Earrings
- Place a large jump rung on the wrong side of one short end.
- Fold in half. The ring should just stick out above the leather.
- Use a sewing machine to stitch inside the ring to attach to the leather.
- Open the bottom of an earring hook and loop through the ring.
- Close the hook wire – repeat with other earring.
Punched Leather Earrings
- Fold the leather in half. I like to have the smooth side out.
- Use a larger open jump ring for this step. Punch a hole in both layers, it should be down into the leather as deep as the ring is tall.
- Open the jump ring and punch through both layers of leather.
- Close the larger ring. Open as smaller ring and put through the one in the leather, add an earring hook and close ring.
- Repeat with other earring.
Those are both pretty easy ways to make these gorgeous leather earrings, right? I’ve already given one pair away to a friend, but I think I will be making many more of these for gifts soon. You can play around with the thickness and length too.

Hi is it possible to cut leather without a machine? Or is there a technique you suggest if someone isn’t using a machine? Thanks
