Fabric Basket Tutorial – with Template
I’ve got a free downloadable template for you to make this fabric basket, but if you want a slightly differently shape you can make your own, just use the same general concept. I had tasty Easter treats in mine over the weekend and now I have paper napkins in it. It’s a great centerpiece for the table, no matter what you put inside. The snaps on the basket make it collapsible as well and it lays flat for storage.
The yellow version {and the pink one in this post are the full size as sewn from the printed pattern} the white dotted fabric basket is smaller made by trimming 1″ from the fold side of the pattern.

Let’s get started with this fabric basket tutorial.. You will need…
- Cotton Fabric, fat quarters work great!
- Fusible Foam {for stability} or fusible fleece. There will be two versions show here. The pink is made with fusible fleece and the yellow with fusible foam.
- and snaps.. or buttons or hook and loop…

You can see the pink version with the fusible fleece. It’s fused to ONE side of the fabric only.
Use the provided template to cut out TWO fabric pieces and and ONE of fusible foam. The foam should be 3/8″ {1cm} smaller than the fabric on all sides.
Here’s how I trace the template to the foam. I trace the pattern to the foam – folded in half. Them draw another line inside to account for the seam allowance. Open the foam and trace, draw again. Cut out foam.
Check that it’s the right size before sewing the fabric, set aside.
How to sew a Fabric Basket
With right sides together pin the two fabrics together. Leave around a 4/5 inch gap on one straight side for turning. Sew with a 1/4 to 3/8 seam allowance.
After you sew, clip all the corners and points.
Turn the piece right side out. You will have an opening on one side.
For the fusible fleece version: Fold the raw edges in and pin. Top-stitch to close the opening and around the rest of the edge to finish. I sewed very close to the edge.
For the fusible foam version: Stuff the foam inside the basket shape and push each piece inside the wings. It takes a few minutes, but it all works out {see video in this post} Fuse fleece to both sides of the fabric with an iron until fabric lays flat and fused. Close turned hole as above.
You can use velcro or a button for this step, but I used plastic snaps. Place a snap on each of the outer tabs. The snaps should be in the center of the tab and towards the end. You can fold up the fabric to see where you want to place the snap.

You could also have more overlap and place the snaps further in.
