free racerback tank top sewing pattern-
Usually June is very hot here, so I was sewing all the tank tops in May to prepare. It’s still cold and rainy here though, so I was a little ahead of the time for my summer sewing. We are still super excited about this new free racerback tank pattern though and I’m sharing the free pattern and tutorial with you today.
I just adore a good racerback tank. I love wearing them and Rose does too. The blue version here is double brushed poly and the balloon version is more of a cotton jersey. Both sewed up and made a cute tank.
I’m going to show you two different methods for finishing the neck/arm openings and choose which ever is easy for you. I want this to be a super simple sew, so keep it that way. {haha}

Here is the size chart you can use to determine what size to sew. I sewed the 6/7 chest for rose with the length of the size 8.
After you print your pattern assemble the pieces. It should look like this. I like to trace the size I need with tissue paper and save the printed pattern for future use.
How to sew a tank top
Ok! let’s get sewing. The printed pattern doesn’t include a piece for the bands/bindings. First, here is a tutorial that will help you with BOTH methods. Bands vs Bindings tutorial.
I didn’t cut specific lengths, but I did cut slightly different widths for the two options. For classing bands I cut my fabric 1.75″ wide. For the binding option I cut the fabric 2.5″ wide. I’ll be showing the binding option here. but check out the tutorial on bands vs. bindings if you want to sew the band option.
When your pieces are cut out you should have 1 front, 1 back and a pile of band/bindings. I just cut a few strips and used them as I went. Start sewing by placing the front and back shoulders together with right sides together. Sew ONE shoulder.
Open up the neckline and fold the bindings in half with the long raw edges together. Sew the raw edges of the binding to the raw edge of the neck opening with a serger or zig-zag stitch. You want to stretch the binding just slightly as you go. I like to stretch about 10%. The binding should be sewn to the BACK of the neckline.
Turn the tank over to the front and fold the seam allowance up towards the binding.
Fold the finished edge of the binding over the seam allowance and onto the tank. Pin or clip in place. Do this with the whole neckline. Topstitch in place. I used a triple zig-zag stitch on my Brother sewing machine for a fun finish. You can also use a twin needle or coverstitch.
Now you have a finished, but open neckline. Sew the other should seam together, matching the inside edge of the binding.
Repeat the same process with the arm openings.
After you have the arms finished, sew up the side seams. finally, hem the tank with a cover stitch, knit stitch or double needle.
After you finish this one, sew up five more because one isn’t enough {haha!} enjoy and share photos online. Tag me @lifesewsavory on all socials!
