I am SOOO excited about todays girl and doll matching dress free sewing patterns!! I’ve partnered with Brother to bring you these two free sewing patterns and both are just fabulous!! The girls dress comes in sizes 2-10 years and the doll dress is for a 14″ {but can be used on an 18″ doll just shorter}. Make with knit fabric with a circle skirt for the ultimate twirling dress.
Matching girl and dress sewing pattern –
Okay! So before I tell you where to download the free sewing patterns, let’s just check out how cute these girl and doll matching dress patterns are! The dress itself is just a simple t-shirt dress with high waist and circle skirt. There are pattern pieces for all parts, including the skirt, so it sews up very easy.
The back is the same as the back, just a bit higher neckline…
What a cute pair!!! You can download the free doll dress and tutorial over on the Brother Sews Blog. The girls dress information is below. The doll pattern links seem to be broken on the Brother Blog, so you can head over there for the tutorial, but here are the files for your cutting machine. Download then unzip the file to use.

Ok… let’s get started. You will need 2 yards of fabric {a bit less for the tiny sizes} to make the girl and doll matching dress. You also need a bit of ribbed binding for cuffs. The size chart is on the pdf pattern but this dress fits chest sizes 20″ to 30″. Because it’s made with knit fabric, it’s a very forgiving dress. So first… Go print the pattern:

Dress Sewing Tutorial –
Assemble your pattern pieces 1-12 and cut out or trace the size you need. You will have 1 circle skirt, 2 sleeves, 1 front, 1 back {cut higher neckline}, 1 neck band and 2 wrist bands. The neckband is cut 1.5″ inches wide x 80% of neck length.. so if the neckline measures 20″ you will cut your band 16″. Cut width now and length after sewing shoulder seam. The wrist bands are cut 4″ wide and 1″ shorter than wrist. Measure the bottom of the arm for width. You can adjust the cuff for a custom fit if desired. The BACK dress should have a neckline slightly higher than the front. This is not marked on the pattern. Just cut a slightly higher neck if desired. {circle skirt not pictured..too big to fit} you may want to adjust the length of the skirt to fit your child. The dress is meant to hit right at the knee.
I used my Brother Simplicity SB3734 for all the main seams and the Brother Innov-ís NS1750D for all the top stitching. I used stitch number 6 {knit stitch} for all topstitching.
With right sides together sew 1 shoulder seam. Measure the neckline, cut your ribbing and sew. Fold the neckband in half and sew right sides together to the neckline.
Sew the other shoulder seam closed and top-stitch using the knit stitch shown on the machine above.
Fold over stretch and sew the sleeve cuffs. Top-stitch is desired.
Sew the sleeves to the shoulders matching the sleeve front with front of dress.
Place dress top with right sides together and sew from end of sleeve to bottom of bodice. Stitch in the loose threads on end of sleeves.
Find even sides of skirt. Match these marks with the sides of the dress and pin. Ease skirt and top to fit, pin and sew.
This high waist makes the dress even more twirly!!!
Finish raw edge with serger or zig-zag stitch and then turn up and hem the dress with a 1/2″ hem.
then….you are finished!! SOOO cute, right?? My daughter has been dancing whenever she wears this dress. It’s also SOO comfortable… Here’s one more link to go download! Don’t forget to head over to Brother and download the doll dress.

This looks cute and oh so twirly. But where is the doll dress pattern? There’s not a link to it. Thanks!
VickiT says
Very cute dress and a great twirly dress too from the looks of it. Thank you so much for this pattern. I just sent an email asking if those of us who don’t have the Brother ScanNCut have the option of an actual pattern so we too can make matching dress for the little girls in our lives and their dolls.
Thanks again

Yes! I think we addressed this by email, but for everyone else I’ll answer again. You can cut the .svg file with ANY cutting machine. OR you can print and cut by hand…

These dresses are adorable! This would be perfect for my daughter’s birthday at the end of the month. With it being so close to Christmas it can be difficult to buy for both without overlap from friends and family. Guaranteed no one else will be giving her this! Thanks so much for sharing your pattern with us at Merry Monday this week!

I tried making a night gown, in size 5t, and the skirt is remarkably shorter than the photo. I made sure to cut out the 5t pieces, but I’m left scratching my head at why mine turned out so short! Help??

Why does pattern say cut 1 out for the front/back? Wouldnt you need two one front one back? It also says cut 2 circles out, wouldnt you only need 1? I am so confused

The doll dress pattern doesn’t seem to be available any longer on the BrotherUSA website. Is there a way to still get the pattern? Already thinking ahead for Christmas gifts for my doll-obsessed toddler. She uses her doll carrier (made with your pattern) all the time!
Thanks for the great patterns!
