Today’s free pattern is a fun hack on the free t-shirt patterns I’ve previously shared. I’ll show you how to make a cardigan front and add a hood to the t-shirt pattern. This creates a fun hooded t-shirt cardigan all made from free patterns. There is a free printable hood pattern and then you will also need the free T-shirt pattern to go with this hood tutorial. You can find the free Boys Long Sleeve shirt and the Free Girls Long Sleeve Shirt here. You can use the boys pattern for boys and girls if you want a baggier fit. I would also recommend up-sizing if you want it to be worn over other clothes.
The hood and cardigan front and finished with a band, making this a perfect place to show off coordinating fabrics. You can also use the same fabric for all. I also added cuff bands on this one, and on the girls a bottom band. I’ll show you how to replace the hems with bands as desired.
What a ham! Not sure why he wanted it to look like his head was falling off…
Speaking of hams… throw little sister in the mix and things really get crazy! Rose’s cardigan is finished with the same exact fabric but in two different colors.
I’m really pleased with how the fit of this hood turned out. Of course you can add it to any t-shirt pattern, but it’s been designed to use with these ones in this hooded T-shirt free pattern for kids tutorial.
This hood is even big enough to cover Rose’s hearing aid and not cause feedback, so that’s a big success for us.
On the girl hoodie I only put two snaps near the top for a more flowing look. Max’s has buttons all the way down. I up-sized Max’s and probably should have shortened the sleeves a bit, but otherwise the fit is perfect for wearing over another t-shirt and is a great second layer option for spring. {which hopefully is coming soon, right??}
So this Hooded T-Shirt Free Pattern for Kids has tons of options… How many buttons/snaps? Wrist bands? Bottom band? Same fabric? Two fabrics? Want to make one or more?
Ok, Let’s get to making this Hooded T-Shirt Free Pattern for Kids! Remember you will need to print the free printable hood pattern and then you will also need a free T-shirt pattern to go with this hood tutorial. You can find the free Boys Long Sleeve shirt and the Free Girls Long Sleeve Shirt here.
Cut out the hood, and shirt pieces. Changes to make: 1. cut the shirt front NOT on fold. You want two front pieces. 2. For bottom cuff – cut 2″ off pattern. 3. For sleeve cuff – cut 1.5″ off sleeve pattern. 4. For wider sleeve {less fitted} make the wrist side of the sleeve wider but 1/2″ on non- fold side. {see photo below} This will give you more room for clothes under.
Assemble your t-shirt according to shirt directions. If you want to add a sleeve or bottom band, cut fabric the width of the sleeve x 3.5″.
Fold band wrong sides together, then sew right sides together to the shirt sleeve. If you want the band to be tight, pull band as you sew, then trim extra band. Use this same technique to add a band to the bottom of the shirt if desired.
Sew center seam on hood.
Match this seam with the center back of shirt. {your shirt should be all finished except neckline and front center.
Pin and sew right sides together. Hood to t-shirt.
Now it should like this with raw edges along one side of front, hood and other front side. Measure the length of this raw edge. Before you measure make sure the bottom is hemmed or banded as you need that correct measurement.
Cut your front edge piece 3.5″ x the length you just measured. It works with the fabric stretch going in either direction. Sew the short ends of your edge piece together as shown. Turn and poke out the corners.
With right sides together, line up the finished end of edge piece with bottom band or hem.
Pin all around shirt front and hood.
Sew and flip forward to finish the shirt.
Add closures as desired and you are done! wow! fun! I’d love to see pictures of how it turned out. Share in our FB group HERE.
