inside: learn how to edit svg files to change text or images to suit your needs. Many SVG files can be edited to change names or dates and this video/photo tutorial will show you how.
I have seen many SVG files that are personalized with a name and/or date. You may wonder how you are going to use those files when you have a different name or date. It’s very easy to edit a purchased SVG file with your cutting machine software. Today I’m going to show you how to change any text in your SVG files to personalize for your needs.
How to Edit SVG files
I love to share free svg files. Once a month I share a collection of free files with some friends who also create free files. There are so many options for free svg files and ones you can buy on many sites around the web. Both free and paid svg files often include an element that you may need to edit for your personalization.
In the image above you can see the original image {this design will be released next week along with a huge list of other wedding themed SVGs}. You may not have gotten married in 2023 and so you to change the date in this image.
Other files you may want to change the name or any other part of the image and in this tutorial I will show you how to change any text in an SVG image. For the Brother section I have provided both a video and photo tutorial. For the Cricut Design space the process is very similar and I have provided a video explanation for you.

Editing SVG files with Brother Canvas Workspace
Ok! Here is the video for using my Canvas workspace software to edit SVG files.
Don’t wait to watch the video or need more details… Here are a few screenshots of the editing process.
Import the SVG file you want to use and load it onto the canvas.
Delete or hide the layers you want to change. Turning off the EYE will hide the layer and it will no longer cut. You can also select and delete the layer.
For this file I want to be able to change the established by date.
Use the T for the text tool to add new text. You can access any font downloaded onto your computer in canvas workspace. Choose one most like the one you deleted or one better if you like.
Place the curser and type in the text. Don’t worry about spacing or size at this point.
Here you can see I added the text with two different fonts. The default text is not filled in on Canvas Workspace, but you can add fill if you want to see it. Both looks will cut just fine and look the same in the end.
Once you have your new text resized and moved to the correct location you are ready to export your file to your cutting machine and get cutting.
Editing SVG files with Cricut Software
Note: I do not regularly use a Cricut. You can tell I do not know what I am doing as much as with the Brother video. I check all my SVG files on both options so that I know it will work for the majority of you. {Sorry Silhouette users.. you are on your own.}
