Kids Crop Top free sewing pattern
Ok! Before we get into the details, lets take a closer look at this top. I’m thinking this will be my daughters new favorite, although she will have to wear a tank under it! I may have to make her some shorter tank tops to go under these shirts.
For this shirt you are going to want to check the chest measurement and go from there. My daughter is right now a size 5 chest on my shirt sizing charts, so I also needed to adjust for height. You can see the strips has a longer bottom band, and the floral I extended the body of the shirt with a smaller band.
SO easy to make adjustments on this basic shirt.
And here’s a little secret… kids size 18, is at least a womens S, so if you are a smaller women, this top may also work for you! I’m totally making one for me!
The simple sleeve shape and bottom band add to the simplicity of the free shirt pattern.

How to sew a crop top –
Cut your fabric. You should have 1 front, 1 back, 1 neckband and one bottom band {you can divide this piece and have two with side seams if needed} All seams are sewn with 3/8″ {1 cm} seam allowance. Adjust the length of the crop top when cutting if you want a longer or shorter look.
All seams should be sewn with a stretch stitch or serger.
Make sure when you cut the front/back piece that you cut one on the higher back neck and one on the lower front neckline.
Start by sewing the shoulder seams.
Next you will fold the neck band in half and sew the short ends together. Then fold the band with the long edges together and the right side of the fabric facing out. Quarter the neckband and the neckline, then stretch to fit. Need more help with neckbands? Here’s my full neckband tutorial.
Now it’s time to sew the side seams. With right sides together, sew the side seams.
Fold back 1/2″ on the sleeve ends and sew a hem. Use a knit stitch, zig-zag or coverstitch to sew.
Cut the bottom band according to the chart. You can adjust the length of the shirt by cutting a wider or narrower bottom band. Make sure the band is the same circumference as the bottom of the shirt. It can be slightly smaller if you want it to come in just a bit.
Sew the short ends of the band together to create a circle. Then fold the long edges together and quarter the band and shirt, just like the neckline. This time you shouldn’t have to stretch as much to fit, but you may have to adjust and ease a bit. Clip and then sew.
And then sew up many many more! You will love this kids crop top free pattern and all the variations you make with this pattern. You can top-stitch the neckline and bottom band if desired.
