I love the project of the day. COSTUMES!!!! {that double as pajamas!} My four year old requested to be something “Spooky” for Halloween, but I had already had this in mind…. so I wasn’t sure how it would go. When I finished the Super Hero Pjs yesterday and showed it to him, he was thrilled… So… I’m not sure he understands the meaning of spooky… He makes me smile! I had the pant tutorial in the works from this summer and added a few items to come up with:
My favorite kind of costume.. RE-USABLE! Costume now, winter Pjs later… And if you’ve read this blog for any length of time, you know I have a slight obsession with pajamas.
I seriously think any mom who can get a decent photo of two or more kids is MY HERO! I cannot get my boys to both smile/look at the camera at the same time. I even tried bribing them with candy (which we never eat!) for this photo shoot… yeah… look how that turned out…
Allllrighty then… Before I show you more photos from our (not-so-great) photo shoot, let me show you how I made the pants and a quick cape tutorial.
I had seen THIS tutorial over at Nap Time Crafters and had bought these pants with that in mind. If I were going to do this again I would buy a BIGGER size to be able to get both boys pants out of one adult size. The little guys pants were pretty patchwork by the time I was done.
So here’s how I cut up the pants.
For pants 1, I used a pair of current pants for length and width. For pants 2 I used a pattern I already had made up. I had only bought a small, so I had to lengthen pants 2 by using some of the scraps.
I sewed up pants 2 like I would any pair. I was trying to use the original hem, but I had to take that out for more length. Pants 1 I sewed up the side seams and then took in the inseam after measuring on my son.
Hem up and you are finished!
My Cape consisted of two parts. A main rectangle body and a tie. The tie part I made from a long strip of the fabric, sewed and turned inside out. I used pinking shears so I didn’t have to hem up the sides of the cape, and turned over a casing along the top edge.
Thread the tie threw the casing and add any decorations to the back.
Scrunch up the fabric until it’s centered and the width you want the top to be. Then sew the cape to the tie on both side. Wahhhlaaa!
I added a star to the front of a H & M shirt, a star to the back of one leg and now you have a complete outfit!
Now you are ready to be a super hero (spooky or not)…
