Last Christmas when my family got together my sister had a fun sweater with a snap neckline. I liked that you could alter the look of a single piece by just changing up the neckline. Snap it up tight..
Or unsnap for a loose neckline on one {or both} shoulders!
Here’s up close of both ways to wear it… I say both, but really there and MANY ways to wear it.. here are both I photographed…
SO fun right? Are you so excited to make one like this? I’ve got all the details, so let’s dive in!
Snap Shoulder Sewing Hack-
First up, I used my Slouchy Sweatshirt pattern, which you can purchase through the button below. You can also use another sweater sewing pattern you may already own. I think this style works best with drop shoulders or dolman style, but you can see what you think.
For one week only {through 10/1/19} Use the code ilovelifesewsavory to receive $1 off this pattern. Spread the word!!
Cut pattern pieces as directed on the pattern and purchase some snap tape. It comes in ALL the colors online or you can get black or white at your local sewing store. Also my sweater knit is from Sincerely Rylee if you are interested…
After you have cut the pieces, check that your snaps are long enough by measuring from one shoulder to the center. You will need double this to go across the full shoulders.
This is the only real tricky part. We nee to modify the neckline as the snap tape can’t make sharp turns or curves. The back I cut the shoulders as directed, then just made a slight turn and straight across the neck. The straight line is my cut and the dotted is the original pattern. Keep the lines straight.
The front I modified a bit more as I didn’t’ want snaps in my throat {haha}I cut up the shoulder about 2 inches and normal {first photo marking} then I cut straight across to where the bottom of the original neckline was. The created the whole front of the shirt as a lower neckline and not choking.
Trim the snap tape so the the tape starts with about an inch of tape free space. Place the tape at the shoulder edge of the neckline. You can have the front neckline overlap the back {as mine did} or the back overlap the front. Depending on your decision here is how you should lay the snaps.
Front over back: Place nub snaps on wrong side of BACK piece, then flip to right side to top stitch. Place hole side of snaps on right side of front, then flip to wrong side to top stitch.
Back over front: Place nub snaps on wrong side of front piece, then flip to right side to topstitch. Place hole side of snaps on right side of back piece and then flip to the wrong side to topstitch.
Let’s take a closer look at those steps… also the video will show this in more detail. Place the snap tape on either the right or wrong side of the fabric. It should over lap about 1/2 way of the tape.. see front and back here:
Stitch with your zipper foot to secure that side of the tape. Then flip to the opposite side of the fabric and pin down. Stitch on the other side of the tape, again with your zipper foot to securely fasten the tape to the fabric.
When you sew it into the shoulder seam make sure to snap shut first and have the front over the back or back over the front as desired.
And here’s your awesome sweater than now has an adjustable snap neckline! I love mine. Make sure to use the code for a discount if you are planning to buy the sweater pattern I used here.
And you did it!!
And here’s one more link to buy this pattern if you are interested in using mine for the sewing hack…
