Inside: A Sweatshirt sewing pattern – Oversized womens hoodie project from a free pdf pattern. All the details to alter the free pattern for a fun comfy look.
When I got this gorgeous spring fabric from Rasperry Creek Fabric I was going to make a summer outfit, but then I knew I wouldn’t be able to wear it for months. I decided a warm clothing item that I could actually wear, made from springy fabric was the way to go. I LOVE my new DIY oversized hoodie and I’ve worn it a few times already. It goes well with jeans or with my workout leggings for days around the house.
Free Sweatshirt Sewing Pattern –
I created this womens sweatshirt sewing pattern a couple of years ago and then haven’t sewn it since. I’ve gotten a lot of wear from those original DIY sweatshirts, but when I was thinking what to make with this fabric I cam across this pattern. You can find this fabric and other gorgeous designs on the Raspberry Creek Site. {I was provided with the fabric in this post}
I did make a couple of simple changes to make it a bit oversized and I’m going to try and demonstrate those today.

I made this sweatshirt pattern a bit wider, a bit longer and just tried to make it a bigger look overall. I also love the hood, it kind of functions as a cowl to keep my neck warm, and I can put it up if I need.
Want to add a fun thumb cuff feature? I didn’t, but it would be super cute to add. Find the thumb cuff sewing tutorial here.
So once you have the original womens sweatshirt sewing pattern downloaded check out my modifications below to sewing your own DIY oversized version.
Sew an DIY Oversized Sweatshirt-
Changes I made:
- For a more fitted hoodies {as designed} I would cut myself a S. I went up one size to start this look, size M traced and then changes made.
- I cut the largest size hoodie even though I cut a Size M Sweatshirt. I also cut TWO hoods and made it lined.
- I cut one size larger than normal.
- I added a bit of width to the sides and sleeves.
- The hem became a slight High-Low. I added about 2 inches to the front and 3/4 inches to the back, then added the bottom band.
- I had to cut a longer band due to the wider shirt and curve.
Here you can see the red lines to give you a guide for adjusting to make an oversized shirt. Of course you can just cut as it was, or just size up, but I wanted it longer for sure. And made a few other slight changes.
After these slight changes were cut, I sewed up the pattern as directed. The only construction change would be the lined hood. I sewed both hoods, then with right sides together sewed the front edge and turned out before sewing to shirt.
