This tank dress sewing tutorial is a easy sewing project that will become a staple in your summer wardrobe. I made mine on a LIVE show last week and I’ve already worn it twice. It’s perfect for spring layering as well!! You can make this with any basic tank pattern you or use my free one as the base for this tank dress tutorial.
Tank dress sewing tutorial –
It’s still a bit chilly here, so this dress is perfect with leggings and a light sweater. This outfit is insanely comfortable as well, and I think it looks pretty cute! I used up the last of the green sweater knit for this tank dress sewing project.
You can make the leggings with this free sewing pattern. I bought the green knit in the fall at Joanne fabric, but you can find several similar fabrics at fabric.com… here are a few fun options… this dress would work great in any light flowing knit..
The actual hot to make a tank dress is just like making a tank top. Just a few modifications when cutting and then follow the directions as given on the tank top tutorial. If you have a tank top pattern you love you can use it. If you need a tank top pattern to modify, go print my free womens tank to from this post. You will also need to keep that post open to follow the directions for sewing. I will show you how to cut it out, then head over to the other post and sew as directed there. You can angle out the sides of the dress directly under the arm, or several inches down to keep the bust more fitted. I started my angle out about 4″ below the under arm. Measure the length you want you tank dress to be. Measure from your shoulder down to the desired length. The side of your dress with angle out from the under arm at a gradual slope to the bottom hem. My bottom hem ended up about 6″ wider than the original tank bottom width. Adjust the slope as needed for your hip width. Sew like a regular tank top.
Here are a few other fun summer outfits to sew as well.
