Remember a few weeks ago when I was part of the You and Me series? I shared my heart about sewing for others… Then I shared the free romper pattern that was featured in that post. AND… I promised to also share the wrap skirt tutorial for the skirt I wore in the series. AND…. today here it is! An easy wrap skirt tutorial.
I found this amazing fabric when we were in Dubai earlier in the year. The man selling it said I was his first sale of the day so he gave me double the yardage I asked for… SO.. I had plenty of fabric to work with, the downside of this chiffon was that it was SO thin.. I planned to make this skirt a double layer, but it still was see-through. Most fabrics would be fine with a double wrap, which is what this tutorial will cover. I ended up just wearing a slip, which is not my first choice. This skirt works best with a thin {ish} flowing fabric. You will probably need at least 4 yards.
Here are my plans…
Basically you need to decide where you want the skirt to sit. High or low waist. Multiply that times to, then divide by four {more if you want thinner panels!} Take that measurement {15} this is the top of each panel, double it {30} this is the bottom of the panel. Measure the length from your waist to your ankle and this the length of each panel. Cut panels from one {or two} fabrics.
Sew the panels together along the long sides, keeping the seams all on one side {the wrong side}. If using a thin fabric, use a thin seam that also binds the edges. Serger or zig-zag. Measure a piece of bias tape as long as the top of the skirt, plus enough length to tie.
I did not finish the top edge, but you could if you want. I just put the raw top edge inside the bias tape and sewed close to the edge.
I finished the bottom edges with a rolled hem. You can do this on either a serger or regular machine. I made my hem completely uneven to add to the ruffled effect.
I really love the way this skirt moves and feels. Its very flow-y and light.

Emily, I love this skirt! Is that lace that I see at the opening? Is it a panel or just an added piece?

I’m not sure what you are seeing. I just wrapped it so that I could see the purple chiffon panel peaking out. My skirt has two of the purple and two of the blue. The edge is just finished with white thread as a rolled hem… is that what you are seeing? Let me know if I can explain more ;o)

Awww thanks!! It was pretty easy! I hope you make one!

By rolled hem do you mean folded over twice and stitched? It looks like you did it with a Serger, but I would have to just use a sewing machine. I love wrap around skirts and am excited to give this a try. Thanks!

I have a challenge that I’m just now operating on, and I have
been on the look out for such info.
