Inside: Use my free legging pattern to create a cute skirt with leggings attached. Add a circle skirt or half circle skirt to leggings for an adorable look for playing hard in any season.
I had the idea to make leggings with skirt attached for Rose this fall and I LOVE how they turned out. I mean LOVE. She almost always put a skirt over her leggings anyway {and some crazy combinations when she did!} so I thought I would just combine the two. This tutorial uses my free leggings pattern and circle skirt tutorial. Both which are free and easy to use and combined made this adorable leggings with skirt!
Leggings with Skirt Attached sewing tutorial-
I always have Rose wear leggings or shorties under her skirts anyway, so this just saves a step and keeps getting dressed simple!
I used a full circle skirt with my leggings, but a 1/2 circle would also look super cute. I was using a fabric scrap for the skirt and folding for a full circle just worked better. The photos here of the short legging have a half circle skirt.
How to make a skirt with leggings attached-
Ok! So to make these cute lettings you will need the free leggings pattern and math from the circle skirt post {either the full or 1/2 skirt math} Use waist measurements to figure out the circle skirt measurements. You can find great legging fabric on Fabric.com.. I’ve got some great picks HERE. Just make sure you are getting fabric with 4 way stretch such as cotton lycra. You will also need 1″ wide elastic for the waist. Print and tape the leggings pattern. Cut the top 1.5″ off the top of the pattern. We are going to add a waistband so cut off this top. Pattern has a 3/8″ seam allowance included.
Cut a waistband 3″ x the circumference of the leggings top. You can cut from the legging OR skirt fabric. This will fold over to create the waistband.
Cut either a full or half circle skirt. I did not finish the hem of my skirt. If you do want to hem it, I would sew the hem at this point.
Sew up the leggings as directed in the tutorial except for the waistband. I’ve been obsessed with adding cuffs to the bottom instead of a hem.
Now put it all together. Leggings right side out.. leggings right side out.. and waistband. Sew the waistband together on the short sides, then fold in half.
Layer all together and pin around the top of leggings.
It should look like this.
Sew around the waist and leave a 2″ opening in the back. This is to thread the elastic.
Measure and cut your elastic. Thread it through the waistband.
Sew the elastic with a zig-zag so it makes a complete circle.
Close the opening.
