Hi friends! Today’s new tutorial is this cute small felt purse free pattern. I’m making these for Christmas gifts, but Rose keeps asking if I’m making these for her…. so I think I’m going to have to sew another one. Anyway, I had some of this thick red felt leftover from my Christmas Tree Growth Chart… and I was thinking what to make with it. I saw a photo of a felt purse, and was inspired to make these cute small felt purses for my nieces for Christmas… I’m also sharing the free pdf pattern with you today!
Small Felt Purse Free Sewing Pattern
This purse is just SO cute! You have to see it in person to really get it. SO MAKE ONE {haha!} You can got DOWNLOAD the pattern to get started. Finished Dimensions: The purse is about 7″ wide and 6″ tall. The strap can be as long as you want it to be, long or short. I’ve got two more to sew and I think I’m going to make shorter straps on the next two.
I’m showing you two different closure options: A big button or magnetic clasp.
Free Purse Pattern –
Okay, let’s get started! You will need to cut the pieces as directed on the pattern. 1 side pieces, 1 front {which is half of the piece} and 1 back piece. You should also cut a 1″ wide piece for the strap, this can be of any length you choose. Your felt must be a bit thick… I recommend at least 2mm or more. You can purchase from Amazon here. You also need a big button or magnet clasp. {optional} fabric or paint to decorate. Haven’t downloaded the pattern? Do so <HERE>
How to sew a felt purse
Start by sewing the side to the front of the bag. Start and one side of the curved front, try to lay the side piece flat on the front. Sew down the side with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. The seam is on the right side of the bag, you will see it. Going around the curved part can be a bit tricky. Drop your needle down and lift the presser foot to line up the two pieces of felt and sew just a bit at a time. Here’s what it should look like from both sides.
Now, find the center of the side piece and the center of the back piece bottom and line them up.
Place the two pieces wrong sides together and pin around one side to find where to start sewing at the top of the side piece.
Sew around the back/side as you did the front. Use a 1/4″ seam allowance and ease around the curves.
Attach the handle strap to both sides.
If using a button, sew it to the front of the bag about 1″ down from the top center. I highly recommend a 2 hole button.
With scissors cut a slit large enough for the button in the top flap. Fold the flap over and mark to find the placement.
Done!!
To add a magnet, cut holes in the flap and front and insert magnets as directed on package.
This leaves the small problem of the back of the magnet showing on the front of the bag… options.. hot glue.sew a button over the top or use fabric as I show below..
Using pinking shears to avoid fraying, cut a curved piece for the front and a long strip for the side. {or any other shape you want to add!}
Glue the long piece to the side of the bag with hot glue.
Glue the curved piece on the front, covering the magnet back… super cute!
Add more felt decorations, fabric or fabric paint to add cute designs to your small felt purse and enjoy!!
