Our daughter has been home almost three months now. People ask what it’s like having a girl, how it’s different than our boys… honestly, the biggest thing we’ve noticed is that we once again have a TODDLER in the house! WOW, I’ve been toddler free for more than two years, but it might as well have been 15 years… It’s a bit of a shock to go back to diapers, naps and a busy girl who gets into everything! I have loved sewing for a little girl though, so today I’m sharing this toddler diaper cover free pattern that is just so cute! I love a little bum with ruffles, and I’ve come to appreciate the cuteness of a diaper bum again too. Make sure to check out all my Free sewing patterns here.
Getting back into the swing of diapers and bottles have kept us on our toes, but…. {although I can’t wait to potty train her}
Is there anything cuter than a toddler in a diaper?
Alright! Ready to make this Toddler Diaper Cover Free pattern? It’s a pretty easy project, so if you have basic sewing skills, you can make this! The pattern looks like this… it’s two pages printed. Do not save this photo, but you can PRINT the free pattern here. Save to your computer and then print at %100. This pattern fits a general 18-24mth size. You can adjust the elastic as desired.
The yellow line is where the two pages meet and the grey circle should match up. Tape up the line and cut out the pattern twice. First cut out the pattern with the dotted line legs and back, then cut the pattern again on the solid lines. In addition, you will need to cut THREE 1″x 22″ strips for the ruffles. You will also need the elastic as directed on the printed pattern.
Here are all the pieces cut out.
First, we will create the ruffles. I used the single basting stitch gathering method. If you need help with gathering, check out this post where I give all the details. Pull the thread until the ruffle is the same width as the back of the diaper cover.
Pin the three ruffles to the back of the cover, start 2″ down from the top and pin the ruffles down.
Sew down the center of the ruffles, on the gathering line, if possible to secure the ruffles to the cover.
Then place the front and back together, with right sides together, and sew the side seams and the bottom seam.
To add elastic to the legs we will use a super simple method. Start at on of the side seams on the inside of the diaper cover. Use a zig-zag stitch and stretch the elastic as you sew around the leg opening. Stretch enough so you can overlap 1/2″ when you come back around.
Secure the overlap. Then fold the elastic over again to enclose it by zig-zag stitching around again.
You can see the finished leg openings… repeat the elastic method with the waist. I pinned one end of the elastic to the side seam and the middle of the elastic to the other side seam. This allows me to see how much to stretch for even distribution.
Sewed around once.
Then turn and sew again to finish. It’s not a perfect finish, but with knit fabric it won’t fray, so you don’t have to fully finish all seams. And I love easy! Slip on your cutie and make the diaper bum even cuter than it already was!
Please let me know if you have any questions when sewing!

super cute. I know for me, in the summer, I always had my kids just in a diaper. Fortunately for me, I’m just finally out of the diaper stage!

Question on the pattern: My pdf file doesn’t have the yellow line nor the gray dot for lining up the pattern. I am new to pdf patterns, so it may be cockpit error. Also, I would think that this would be a symmetrical pattern but the legs don’t seem to be the same curve for the fronts or straight lines for the back. Thanks for any help.
