If you’ve read this blog for awhile you know I’m passionate about free sewing patterns and I love to exercise. Today I’m combining these two with a free sewing pattern sports tank top and it’s just fabulous for all of us getting back in shape after the holidays.
Free Sewing Pattern Sports Tank –
I do some sort of exercise five days a week, so I’m wearing {and washing} a lot of sweaty clothes. These new workout tanks help with the wearing part..
Let’s talk about making this cute women’s sports tank… I made two and I LOVE them {haha} The front of the tank is a classic shape and the perfect length to cover, even while moving. The free sewing pattern comes in sizes xs – xxl and is made of light mesh, making it a perfect tank for being active, no matter what your fitness level.
This free sewing pattern sports tank sews up pretty fast and is SO comfy!! I hope you enjoy the outdoor photos, as I braved the cold to take these without another layer on {haha} I can’t wait for it to warm up so I don’t have to run with so many layers on. Also, if you love the leggings I’m wearing in these photos you can grab my free legging pattern here.I think the back of this sports tank pattern is super cute with the elastic on the back. I probably should have just used black elastic for the center, as well as the bindings, but here you can see what it looks like more clearly. The neck and arms are bound with FOE {fold over elastic} for great stretch and mobility.

Okay! Let’s make a sports tank!
You will need 1 yard of mesh {I like a tight mesh so its not see through} and FOE. You can print the free sewing pattern by clicking the photo below. This will take you to Craftsy My Shopwhere you can download this pattern for free. Need help or want to show off what you made? Join our group on Facebook to post photos and and ask questions.
The link below has been updated to now go to my personal shop. Craftsy/Bluprint has closed down. The link here will take you to my shop.
Print and tape your pattern together. Here’s what the layout should look like. There is no page 12 in the print out. a 3/8″ seam allowance is included on the pattern pieces.
Again you will need around 3 yards Fold Over Elastic and Tight Mesh Fabric – 1 Yard. Cut out all the pieces on the fold.
Sew the side seams of the front and back together with right sides touching.
Sew the back yoke to the front at shoulders with right sides together.
Bind the arm hole edges with the fold over elastic. I place half on the wrong side of the shirt, then fold the elastic over to the front of the fabric.
Pin the elastic over the raw edge of the fabric with the pins on the right side, continue around the arm openings.
Sew with a zig-zag stitch, twin needle {details here} or coverstitch machine.
The arm openings are open like this.
Measure around the neckline of your tank and then subtract 1″ for xs-m and 2″ for l-xxl. Cut your FOE to this length and then sew in a circle.
Pin and sew around the neck opening.
Now hold the top back center in you hand. If you are using FOE for the back elastic it will be 1″ wide and you will have to fold the fabric to match. IF you use wider elastic you will not need the pleat.
With right sides together place the elastic on the back and sew.
Top-stitch with twin needle or zig-zag.
Repeat to attach the elastic to the top yoke as well.
Hem the shirt with one of the same stretchy stitches as mentioned above. I used a 3/4″ hem.
And you’ve done it!! You’ve made a super cute and useful workout tank that hopefully will inspire you to get out and get moving!!
