(it looks like the brown goes up on the right side, its sewed evenly, but lifted up by a little post on the corner of our bed. I don’t love it, but can live with it!)
Here’s my final bedroom project! A double bedskirt, made by combining two skirts as one. Our bed is high…so I needed an extra long bed skirt. I didn’t see any longer bedskirts in the store this summer. I know I could order one, but they seemed pricy and I knew I could come up with something on my own. I also liked the idea of a two-colored skirt. I’ll show you how I did it….
Start with two skirts the size of your bed. (Yes, my husband and I sleep in a double bed)
Start by measuring the height from your bed edge to floor. Mine was 20 inches, so all my measurements will be for that height.
Decide which skirt will be the top layer (the most visible). Take the skirt that will be on the under-side (for me the tan) and measure from the bottom of the skirt to the 20 inch mark. I put a pin there, then I added an inch for seam allowance and pinned there too.
FOR YOU: measure your bed height, use this plus one inch for seam allowance.
Use a marker (any is fine, it won’t be seen) to mark all around the skirt at this length.
When you get to the corner make sure to mark the 21 inch corner. (or whatever your height) Mine looks like the L in this picture.
Cut the under-skirt on the marks. Here is what mine looked like cut.
Place the underskirt on the floor/table (wherever you are working) then put the top-skirt over it. I measured the 20 inches from the top of the brown to the bottom of the tan.
Pin at this place.
Turn both skirts over and pin all the way around on the backside. It was about an inch overlap of the non-skirt part.
The tricky part of this pinning is the corner. I’ve tried to show what I did in this photo. The underskirt will not match up exactly because of the overlap.
Sew around the skirt (leave the corner open for now) and put it on the bed. (hint…wait until your husband gets home to help wrestle the mattress. I did this on my own and it was not good!)
This is what the corner looked like when I got it on the bed. The brown has the original tailored corner and the tan is cut open.
Our bed is a bit tricky because we have lifts on the legs. Which is why I needed the extra long bedskirt in the first place! So… now lift the top layer so you can see the underskirt. Pull the two sides together (tan colored here) and sew together. I hand-sewed this part. Pull down the top layer and check it out! The tan doesn’t come completely together because of our bed shape. Hopefully yours will cover the whole corner. I don’t mind the way this looks, even open a little.

Great job. I had this same idea for my daughter’s room. I just can’t talk myself into buying two skirts! Your idea may work with some scrap fabric. Hmmm. Pinning. Thanks so much for linking up at One Creative Weekend! I hope to see you back on Friday.
