I realized the other day that while it is summer and pretty warm here, I’m still sewing a ton with sweater knits. I’ve come to see that sweaters aren’t just for cool weather and today I’m excited to share with you several ideas for light sweaters for summer. I’ve got pattern details as well as fabric info AND tons of pictures to inspire you to sew gorgeous sweaters, even in the summer.

Womens summer tops – sewing sweaters

If you live where it is just SO SO hot in the summer, I’m not sure these summer sweaters are for you. But if you live in a place with cooler mornings/evenings or varying temperature depending on the day {like we have here in CO} then you are going to love sewing with sweater knit even though it’s summer.

I made these three light sweaters for summer just this week when I was all excited about sharing my makes.. The white short sleeve one I sewed live and you can find the video here.

In addition to those new ones, here are some I’ve sewn in the past few weeks..

light sweaters for summer – patterns

Let’s talk about the patterns seen here and then we will dive in the fabric… My favorite!!!

For the yellow stripes above I just used my technique to trace a shirt I already have. You can see the details of how to do this here in the sew a shirt tutorial.

The cardigan style sweater is my womens open cardigan with the gathered pocket hack. I love the way it turned out in off white lightweight sweater knit and the floral pockets.

This pink and white sweater was made using the free womens raglan pattern and shortening the sleeves to just above the elbow.

This white with stripes can be seen sewn in entirety in the video above. I used my Easy Breezy Womens Tee for the base and added some simple modifications… again all are detailed in the video above.

This cute number I just made for wearing while taping It’s Sew Easy. I’m headed to film again in a few weeks and I needed something new to wear {haha} I used my womens Slouchy sweatshirt without the bottom band {lengthened} and with 3/4 length cuff sleeves.

So you can see that there are many place to get great looking knit for making summer sweaters. You can start looking in your favorite places to buy fabric as well. I would look for words like “lightweight” and “loose weave” when looking for sweater fabric for summer.
