Several years ago I designed my first board shorts pattern. The Cool Dude Boardshorts were one of my first pdf patterns and have been a hit for years in our home and in hundreds of other places around the world {thank you for your support} As my kids have gotten older they have requested certain features in their boardshorts and I’ve tried to put all their favorites in this new Sand N Surf Boardshorts pdf pattern. ENJOY! This is also my first filly layered pattern AND projector file option.

Ok! I’m about to spam you with lots of photos {haha} I sewed each kid a pair of these shorts before we headed off on our spring break trip last month, so we could thoroughly test them for comfort and usability. At the end of the trip all three gave their pair a big thumbs up, so let’s take a look at the best features. {these photo are from last year, but the suits are still going strong!} Growing boys mean new suits are needed for this spring break, so that’s what I’ll be sewing in the sew-a-long.

The thing I love the most is that this pattern is actually great for boys AND girls. I sewed a pair for Rose at the last minute and she wore them as much as the boys. She loved them in the sand and the pool. I paired hers with a top version of the girls classic swimsuit and she loves it.

My son loves boardshorts with a slightly shorter length, so these are designed to hit mid thigh. On the smaller sizes they may fit just a bit longer since smaller kids have shorter legs {ha!} You can see the approx. length here on my kids. I didn’t lengthen or shorten any of these from the original pattern. My 14 year old is wearing the size 16, the 12 year old the size 14 and the 9 year old the size 8.

Another great feature of these shorts is the side pocket. It’s made of mesh so water and sand flow right through and the sewing method makes them super simple to sew.

We also love the waistband options. You can see them in detail here. I’ll share more photos below as well.

The tie front is completely optional as it’s sewn over the elastic waistband. My boys liked the ties, but you can easily leave them off.

For my boys the built in undershorts are a must for swim shorts. They won’t wear swim with traditional style liners any more, so these of course have undershorts. I eliminated the center seam as well, so there is no rubbing or discomfort. I still used the same undershorts for the girls version and she said it was very comfortable as well.
