My brother is getting married this summer, so I thought this was the perfect opportunity to sew something a little fancy for me. I used the Caroline Party Dress by Welcome to the Mouse House… I LOVED the pattern. More about that later. For this dress I bought some Chinese Silk from a market here in HK. I had a really hard time sewing with this fabric, so while the result is gorgeous and the fabric amazing, this was probably a one-time thing. {ha!} I love that I was able to finish a second #selfishsewing project this week.
I love a dress with pockets.. remember this fun skirt tutorial I shared last summer? This one is great too. I love the princess seams in the bodice, the fit is great! I did think the pattern ran a bit big, so I was glad I sewed up a few test tops. The pattern comes with SO many different options.. this one is sleeveless and above the knee {got a bit higher than that!} with pleats.
The dress ended up a bit shorter than planned because I had hem issues. You can tell its not perfect. The back is a a bit longer, I think it works though… a little mini hi-lo thing. Oh and this was not a good hair day {what is that flip on the side??} The other day when I shared my free t-shirt pattern, I loved my hair! You can tell a big difference in the photos.
Here are a couple more shots… I really do love the fabric and the way the whole thing turned out. I went with pleats, not gathers… another hard part of this. Slippery silk and pinning pleats…. ummm not fun. The back is really cute too. I added the belt I had on hand, and I think I like it, but I may look for something else too.
Here’s a close up of the fabric and how it looks.
I couldn’t get the princess seams to lay flat so I ended up top-stitching them and the result is perfect! I think it adds to the whole effect.
